Edinburgh is built on extinct volcanoes — Arthur's Seat is a 251m one you can climb in about 45 minutes from the centre for the best view in town, free. The Old Town's real character is in the closes: narrow stone alleys off the Royal Mile, some sealed underground (Mary King's Close runs tours through a 17th-century street buried beneath the City Chambers).
