🌍 About Ipoh
Ipoh got rich on tin, and you can still see it in the Old Town's faded shophouses and in Concubine Lane (Lorong Panglima), a sliver of an alley once kept for tin barons' mistresses, now packed with stalls. The food is the real reason to come. Ipoh white coffee was invented here — beans roasted in palm margarine, so it's smoother and less bitter — and the bean sprout chicken is genuinely worth seeking out: the sprouts are short, fat and crunchy because they're grown in mineral-rich water off the surrounding limestone hills. Those same hills hold cave temples like Sam Poh Tong, built into the rock. Come December to March, the driest, slightly cooler stretch. September to December is the wet monsoon — afternoon downpours are normal, though fares are often cheaper then.
