Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ) — Airport Guide 2026

The Sunport kept its 1930s nickname, and the terminal — a single Pueblo Revival adobe building with a genuine collection of regional art on the walls — earns it: you know you’ve landed somewhere specific before you’ve collected your bag.

🏛️ The Terminal

One terminal, one security checkpoint, Pueblo Revival design with adobe forms and Spanish-colonial detailing throughout, and a regional art collection that runs the length of the concourses. Southwest Airlines is the dominant carrier. American, Delta, and United serve the western and Texan hubs; Allegiant runs leisure routes; Boutique Air — which operates nine-to-twelve-seat turboprops — connects ABQ to New Mexico’s smaller towns. The traffic is overwhelmingly domestic. Most people at the Sunport have not been through customs and will not be.

The airport sits roughly 5 km south-east of downtown, unusually close for a US airport, with the Sandia Mountains directly to the east. That proximity shapes the entire layover calculation.

🛂 Border & Visa

ABQ is a domestic airport in practice. Scheduled international service is minimal; most international visitors reach Albuquerque on a domestic connection from a US gateway — Dallas, Denver, Phoenix, or Houston — where they have already cleared US Customs and Border Protection. If you do arrive internationally direct, the standard CBP process applies. ESTA covers Visa Waiver nationals; everyone else needs a US visa, typically obtained before travelling to whatever gateway they entered. Global Entry speeds the CBP queue. Currency is the US dollar throughout.

🚌 Getting Into the City

⚠️ Route 250 is suspended
The dedicated peak-hour airport express is not running. Do not plan around it.

ABQ RIDE, Albuquerque’s city bus network, has moved to zero-fare — all buses are free — and city buses still serve the Sunport. Without Route 250, however, routing is indirect and schedule-dependent. Check the current ABQ RIDE stop and timing for your specific flight before counting on public transit.

🚕 Rideshare: ~$15–20, 10–15 minutes
This is cheap by US airport standards, and the proximity makes it so. For most travellers, a rideshare or taxi is the default — the maths are reasonable and the journey is short.

There is no rail connection. Albuquerque’s Rail Runner commuter train operates along the Rio Grande valley and serves the downtown Albuquerque station — not the Sunport. It will not help you here.

🛋️ Lounges

⚠️ Priority Pass at The Club ABQ — verify before you rely on it
Acceptance has been inconsistent. Check the Priority Pass app on the day rather than assuming your card gives access.

The Sunport has one lounge: The Club ABQ, airside near Gate A6. It is a contract lounge — not affiliated with any particular airline — with seating, Wi-Fi, drinks, and snacks, available on a pay-in basis. There is no airline flagship lounge here. If your Priority Pass status confirms access on the day, use it; otherwise treat The Club as a paid option and price it accordingly.

🍽️ Food Before You Fly

New Mexican food is its own cuisine and rewards being treated as one. The question you will be asked at every counter and sit-down in the state is “red or green?” — a reference to which New Mexico chile you want on your plate.

🌶️ Red or green? — say “Christmas” for both
Red chile is earthy and deep; green runs brighter and can be hotter depending on the season’s Hatch crop. Neither is wrong. If you can’t choose, “Christmas” gets you both on the same plate.

The green chile cheeseburger is the state signature. Sopaipillas — puffed fried pastry served with honey — are the traditional close to a meal. The Sunport has local New Mexican food airside, which is not a given for an airport of this size and traffic level. For a carry-home, a jar or bag of Hatch green chile travels well; Hatch is a town in southern New Mexico and the crop has a serious regional following. Tipping is expected at 18–20% in sit-down settings.

💡 Layover: What’s Actually Achievable

🗺️ 4-hour layover: Old Town is realistic
Old Town — the 1706 Spanish-colonial plaza with the San Felipe de Neri church — is 10–15 minutes by rideshare from the airport. Rideshare in, walk the plaza, eat, rideshare back with a 90-minute return-and-security buffer. It fits.

ABQ’s 5-kilometre proximity to downtown is what makes a layover viable at all. At 10–15 minutes by rideshare, the numbers work in a way they simply do not at airports 25–30 km out.

Four hours: Old Town and the surrounding downtown core. The 1706 plaza and San Felipe de Neri church are the anchors. Allow the 90-minute return buffer — it is the right margin.

Five hours or more: The Sandia Peak Tramway becomes possible. The base is on the north-east edge of the city, not close to downtown; the tram ride to the 3,163-metre crest of the Sandia Mountains is long; and the total round-trip eats into your buffer significantly. It is one of the longest aerial tramways in the world and the views over the high desert are worth the trip — but not on less than five hours.

Under three hours: Stay airside. The local food and the art in the terminal make it considerably more bearable than the average US concourse.

🎈 Balloon Fiesta: October — the city fills up
The International Balloon Fiesta brings hundreds of hot-air balloons to Albuquerque every October. If your travel crosses that window, expect significantly more airport and city congestion than usual.

The Rio Grande runs through the middle of the city. Albuquerque was the primary filming location for Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. Neither fact changes the layover maths, but both explain why the city has a recognition level disproportionate to its size.

🧭 Practical Notes

  • City buses are free but Route 250 (the airport express) is suspended — check current ABQ RIDE routing before relying on public transit for the airport leg.
  • Rideshare or taxi: ~$15–20, 10–15 minutes — the default for most travellers.
  • No rail link to the Sunport. The Rail Runner serves downtown Albuquerque, not the airport.
  • Priority Pass at The Club ABQ has been inconsistent — verify on the day via the app.
  • Reduced-mobility assistance is available at no charge; arrange through your airline before travel.
  • Currency is US dollar throughout. Tipping at 18–20% is standard in restaurants.

❓ FAQ

How do I get from the Albuquerque Sunport to downtown? +
ABQ RIDE city buses are zero-fare (free) and serve the Sunport, but the dedicated airport express Route 250 is currently suspended — check the current routing before counting on it. Most travellers take a rideshare or taxi: approximately $15–20 and 10–15 minutes, as the airport is only about 5 km from downtown. There is no rail connection to the airport.
Is there a Priority Pass lounge at the Sunport? +
The Club ABQ near Gate A6 is the only lounge — a pay-in contract lounge with seating, Wi-Fi, drinks, and snacks. Priority Pass acceptance here has been inconsistent; check the Priority Pass app for current status on the day rather than assuming access.
Can I visit Albuquerque on a layover? +
With four hours: yes, comfortably. Old Town — the 1706 Spanish-colonial plaza with the San Felipe de Neri church — is 10–15 minutes by rideshare from the airport. Allow a 90-minute return-and-security buffer. The Sandia Peak Tramway needs five hours or more: the base is on the north-east edge of the city, the tram ride to 3,163 metres is long, and the total time required is real. Under three hours: stay airside.
Is there a train to the Albuquerque Sunport? +
No. Albuquerque’s Rail Runner commuter train serves a downtown station, not the Sunport. From the airport your options are city buses (free, but Route 250 is suspended — check current routing), rideshare, or taxi.
What currency does Albuquerque use? +
US dollar. Tipping at 18–20% is expected in sit-down restaurants.
Is ABQ primarily a domestic airport? +
Yes. Scheduled international service is minimal; most international visitors arrive at ABQ on a domestic connection from a US gateway — Dallas, Denver, Phoenix — where they have already cleared US Customs. If you arrive internationally direct, standard CBP applies; ESTA covers Visa Waiver nationals.
Which airlines fly from ABQ? +
Southwest Airlines is the largest operator. American, Delta, and United serve the standard western and Texan hubs. Allegiant runs leisure routes. Boutique Air, which operates small turboprops, connects ABQ to New Mexico’s regional towns. Traffic is almost entirely domestic.
What should I eat at the Sunport? +
A green chile cheeseburger, and be ready for “red or green?” — or say “Christmas” to get both chiles on the same plate. Sopaipillas with honey are the traditional finish. The Sunport has local New Mexican food airside. For a carry-home, Hatch green chile in a jar travels well.
What is the Sandia Peak Tramway? +
An aerial tramway — one of the longest in the world — that climbs from the north-east edge of Albuquerque to the 3,163-metre crest of the Sandia Mountains. The views over the high desert are the reason to go. From the airport, allow at least five hours: the base is across the city and the tram ride itself takes significant time each way.
What are all my transit options from ABQ? +

Three options: free city buses via ABQ RIDE (Route 250 airport express suspended — check current routing for the Sunport stop); rideshare or taxi (~$15–20, 10–15 min); no rail link. For a direct run to downtown, rideshare is the practical default for most travellers.
