Varna's Archaeological Museum holds the oldest worked gold on Earth — a hoard of over 3,000 pieces buried around 4,600 BC at the Varna Necropolis, older than the pyramids and Mesopotamia. That's the real reason to come. After it, walk the Sea Garden, a long clifftop park that runs the length of the shoreline with the city beach below. Eat rapan — the Black Sea sea snail, usually breaded and fried — or a plate of mussels in white wine and garlic; in high summer order tarator, the cold cucumber-and-yogurt soup. Most seafood spots run full menus April–October and shut in winter, so off-season you'll miss the coast at its best. June and September give you warm sea without the July–August crowds and peak prices — and shoulder-month fares run cheaper too.
