Langkawi has been a duty-free island since 1987, which is the practical thing to know: chocolate, cosmetics and alcohol are genuinely cheap here, so people fly out with loaded bags. It's also a UNESCO Global Geopark — the limestone karsts and the Kilim mangroves are the real landscape, best seen by boat rather than from the much-hyped SkyCab cable car and curved sky bridge. Eat laksa Utara, the northern version: a sour, fish-heavy mackerel broth with rice noodles, sharper and less sweet than the coconut laksa down south. Skip the resort buffets and find it at a roadside stall. Come December to February for dry, reliable days — that's also peak, so fares and rooms cost more. Avoid September and October, the wettest stretch.
