🌍 About Shannon, County Clare
Shannon itself is a purpose-built town from the 1960s, grown up around the airport — handy to land at, not the reason you came. That's County Clare around it. Bunratty Castle, 15 minutes away, is one of Ireland's most complete medieval tower houses, with a folk park of reconstructed thatched cottages and a working pub. Half an hour west are the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren, a grey limestone moonscape where Arctic and Mediterranean wildflowers grow side by side. Irish coffee was invented down the estuary at Foynes in 1943, for cold flying-boat passengers — order one and mean it. Shannon Airport also ran the world's first duty-free shop, from 1947.
