Luxembourg Airport (LUX) — Airport Guide 2026
Luxembourg’s Findel airport sits 6 km east of the capital and has one genuine advantage over almost every other airport in Europe: the tram into town is free — not a shuttle, not a transfer ticket, not a coupon — free, as is every bus, tram and second-class train in the country. That single fact changes the calculus for a layover here more than any lounge or retail offer could.

🏢 Terminal Layout & the Luxair Hub
One main terminal — Terminal A — handles the bulk of traffic, with a small Terminal B used for some low-cost and regional flights. It is compact by European standards, which keeps the experience manageable: security queues move, wayfinding is clear, and the gate walk rarely exceeds ten minutes.
Three categories of carrier share the place: Luxair, the flag carrier based here, covering European cities and leisure routes; Ryanair and easyJet for the price-driven traffic; and the legacy hub feeders — Lufthansa connecting to Frankfurt and Munich, KLM to Amsterdam, SWISS to Zürich, British Airways and Turkish alongside. That mix reflects Luxembourg’s economy — a lot of business travel, a large international workforce, cross-border commuters from Germany and Belgium — more than any leisure charter model.
The airport hit a record 5.3 million passengers in 2025 and expects 5.7 million in 2026. It rarely feels overwhelmed at that scale.
🛂 Border & Visa
Luxembourg is in the Schengen Area and uses the euro, so flights arriving from other Schengen countries clear without passport control.
⚠️ EES is live — non-EU arrivals, budget extra time
The Entry/Exit System went fully operational at Schengen external borders on 10 April 2026, after a phased rollout from October 2025. Your first entry of a 90-in-180-day cycle requires a biometric record — facial image and fingerprints — which takes longer than a manual stamp. Subsequent entries in the same cycle are faster.
ETIAS — the separate online travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors — is not yet in force. It is expected in the fourth quarter of 2026. Until then, a valid passport is all that is needed to land here from outside the Schengen Area.
| Passport | Visa for short stay? | EES applies? | ETIAS once live (Q4 2026)? |
|---|---|---|---|
| EU / EEA / Swiss | No | No | No |
| UK | No (≤90/180 days) | Yes | Yes |
| USA / Canada / Australia / NZ | No (≤90/180 days) | Yes | Yes |
| Japan / South Korea / Singapore | No (≤90/180 days) | Yes | Yes |
| India / China / South Africa | Yes — Schengen visa required | Yes (recorded at entry) | N/A while visa required |
🚊 Getting Into the City
🚊 Tram Line T1 — free, every ~8 minutes
Board at Findel – Luxembourg Airport, ride to Kirchberg (the EU and banking quarter) and then Gare Centrale in about 35 minutes. No ticket, no tap card, no app. Runs from roughly 04:00 to just after 23:00. For the old town, alight before the terminus rather than going all the way to Gare Centrale.
The free-transit policy covers the whole country — buses, trams, second-class trains — and has done since 1 March 2020. It is not a trial or a tourist programme; it is the national system. City buses 16 and 29 also link the airport, equally free.
Taxis cost roughly €30–40 into the centre and take 15–20 minutes. That is not a bad price by European capital standards, but given that the tram is free, frequent and direct, a taxi is only sensible late at night or when luggage makes the tram impractical.
⚠️ Skip the airport currency exchange desk
Luxembourg is heavily card-based; most visitors will not need cash at all. If you do need euros, use a bank ATM — the airport change desk rates are poor, as they are everywhere.
🛋️ Lounges
🛋️ The Lounge (Luxair Business Lounge) — Priority Pass, ~05:00–20:00
Located near Gate A1 on the first floor of Terminal A, after security. Accepts Priority Pass and is on the Mastercard network. Complimentary food, drinks (beer and wine included), free Wi-Fi, a business area with computers, newspapers, and a children’s play area. Paid day-pass access is available at the desk when capacity allows; check the rate on arrival. At a mid-size business-oriented airport, it is rarely as packed as a comparable lounge at a large leisure hub.
There is one lounge. It covers the job.
🍽️ Food Before You Fly
Luxembourg’s cooking lands somewhere between German portions and French technique — a sensible reflection of where the country sits. The national dish is Judd mat Gaardebounen: smoked pork collar with broad beans, slow-cooked and substantial. Street food means Gromperekichelcher — spiced fried potato cakes, sold at markets and fairs, excellent when fresh. Bouneschlupp (green-bean soup) and Rieslingspaschtéit (a pâté en croûte made with Riesling) cover the savoury range; Quetschentaart (plum tart) is the dessert to watch for.
🍷 The carry-home: Moselle wine or Crémant
The Luxembourg Moselle valley produces good Riesling, Pinot Gris and Auxerrois — under-known relative to Alsace or the German Mosel, and priced accordingly. A bottle of Crémant de Luxembourg sparkling is the obvious souvenir; both clear EU customs without issue.
💡 Layover: the Casemates, the Grund, and the Math
Luxembourg City is a fortress built on cliffs above two river gorges. The old town and fortifications are a UNESCO World Heritage site. The two things worth going specifically for are the Bock Casemates — kilometres of tunnels carved into the rock below the old city, with vertiginous views from the ramparts — and the Chemin de la Corniche, the clifftop promenade above the Alzette valley. The Corniche earns its reputation; it is the one thing in this city that is hard to find elsewhere.
Below, in the gorge, the Grund is the lower town — picturesque, compact, worth the trip down. You can reach it from the upper city on the free Pfaffenthal panoramic elevator or the Grund lift. On Kirchberg, the modern plateau holds the EU institutions (the European Court of Justice) and the Philharmonie concert hall.
💡 Layover math — honest version
The free tram is the enabler. Allow 90 minutes for the return journey and security re-entry, and you have roughly 2.5 hours of city time on a 4-hour layover. That covers the old town and the Casemates comfortably. A 3-hour layover is workable for a quick look at the upper town only — the Grund becomes a stretch. Because transport costs nothing, the usual layover friction (taxi fare, ticket hassle, sunk cost anxiety) simply does not apply here.
The Grund and Kirchberg are easy add-ons with the free, frequent tram if time allows; neither requires a dedicated trip.
🧭 Practical Notes
- Transport is free — just board. No ticket, no app, no validation step. The tram, buses and second-class trains are free for everyone across Luxembourg. The only paid option from the airport is the taxi.
- Tram stop name: Findel – Luxembourg Airport. Line T1 departs toward Kirchberg and Gare Centrale. For the upper town and Casemates, alight before the terminus.
- Reduced-mobility assistance is free under EU rules but must be requested through your airline at least 48 hours before departure. The meeting point is signed in the terminal.
- EES border processing takes longer on a first entry in the 90-day cycle. Non-EU travellers should budget extra time at immigration.
