Oradea International Airport (OMR) — Airport Guide 2026
Romania joined Schengen in full on 1 January 2025 — land borders with Hungary included — and still uses the leu. Oradea Airport, 6 km from a city that has spent the last decade restoring one of Central Europe’s more serious Art Nouveau collections, is small enough that the terminal takes about four minutes to clear.

✈️ Scale and Routes
One passenger terminal; the full operation is visible from the front door. About six airlines serve the airport. TAROM, HiSky, and Animawings share the Bucharest shuttle — the only domestic route. International options are limited but functional: Wizz Air Malta flies to Milan Bergamo and Rome Fiumicino, HiSky covers London Stansted, and LOT and Lufthansa feed Warsaw, Frankfurt, and Munich respectively, making OMR usable as a back-door into the main European hubs.
The cross-border traffic is real: Oradea is close enough to the Hungarian border that some passengers arrive by road and depart here rather than using Debrecen.
⚠️ No rail connection
There is no train from the airport. Oradea’s rail station is in the city centre. It is the bus or a taxi for the 6 km — nothing else.
🛂 Border, Schengen Status, and the Currency Anomaly
Romania’s Schengen accession happened in two stages: air and sea borders opened on 31 March 2024, land borders on 1 January 2025. Flights between Oradea and destinations elsewhere in Schengen — Warsaw, Frankfurt, Munich — now have no passport control. The land border with Hungary, minutes from the city, is also open.
What Romania did not acquire with Schengen membership is the euro. The currency is the Romanian leu (RON), worth roughly five to the euro and about 4.6 to the dollar. Cards are accepted widely in Oradea itself, but the figures on your receipt are lei, not euros, and the airport café will not take euros.
For passengers arriving on the London Stansted route, the Entry/Exit System (EES) became fully operational at the Schengen external border on 10 April 2026. It replaces the manual stamp with a biometric record — facial image and fingerprints — that tracks the 90-in-180-day short-stay allowance. The first entry of a cycle takes longer while that record is created. ETIAS — the paid pre-travel authorisation for visa-exempt non-EU visitors — is a separate system, not yet live, expected in the fourth quarter of 2026.
💱 It’s lei, not euros
Romania is in Schengen but not the eurozone. ~5 RON = €1, ~4.6 RON = $1. Prices at the airport and in the city are in lei. Don’t arrive expecting to spend euros.
Passport and border requirements by nationality
| Nationality | Visa for short stay? | EES applies? | ETIAS (once live, Q4 2026)? |
|---|---|---|---|
| EU / EEA / Swiss | No | No | No |
| UK | No (≤90/180 days) | Yes | Yes |
| USA / Canada / Australia / NZ | No (≤90/180 days) | Yes | Yes |
| Japan / South Korea / Singapore | No (≤90/180 days) | Yes | Yes |
| India / China / South Africa | Yes — Schengen visa | Yes (recorded at entry) | N/A while visa required |
🛂 EES live since 10 April 2026
Non-EU arrivals on the London route (and any other non-Schengen service) go through EES biometric registration. First-time entries in a new 180-day cycle take longer — allow extra time at passport control. Flights from within Schengen have no passport check.
🚌 Getting Into Oradea
Bus line 28
OTL bus line 28 runs the ~6 km between the airport and the city centre. The timetable is correlated with the flight schedule, so the bus should connect with arrivals and departures rather than running to a fixed clock interval. A ticket costs around 3–6 RON, paid by SMS to 7429 with the line number, by card, or cash. Oradea’s tram network covers the centre once you are in.
Taxi and Bolt
A metered taxi into the centre runs about 25–35 RON (roughly €5–7), 10–15 minutes depending on traffic. The Bolt app works well in Oradea and is reliably the cheapest option with a price shown before you book. In a street taxi, insist on the meter. Avoid unmarked-car touts outside the terminal.
🚕 Bolt is the default — ~25–35 RON
The Bolt app shows the fare before you commit. Street taxis at the rank are metered too, but the app removes ambiguity. The 10–15 minute ride into the centre is short enough that price differences are minor; the booking confirmation is the real benefit.
🛋️ Lounges
There is no Priority Pass lounge at Oradea, and no confirmed lounge of any kind. The terminal has a café and seating. If a lounge is important, this airport will disappoint — that is the honest picture for a small regional airport with six airlines. The practical alternative, given that bus line 28 is timed to flights and the city is 6 km away, is to wait in one of Oradea’s cafés rather than the terminal.
🍽️ Food Before You Fly
Oradea is in Crișana, the region that sits along the Romanian-Hungarian frontier, and the cooking reflects it. Sarmale (cabbage rolls, usually pork and rice), mici (grilled minced-meat rolls, eaten with mustard), and papanași (fried dough served with sour cream and jam) are the Romanian backbone. The Hungarian influence shows in gulaș and langoș — deep-fried dough with cheese and sour cream. Kürtőskalács, the spiral chimney cake sold at market stalls, comes from the same cross-border tradition.
For carry-home: palincă. The Bihor county surrounding Oradea is known for fruit brandy — plum and pear versions are the most common — and a sealed bottle clears EU customs without issue. Romanian wine travels the same way. Prices in lei.
🥃 Palincă from the Bihor region
The Bihor county fruit brandies are the carry-out of choice here — better provenance than the generic bottles at the airport. Sealed bottles clear EU customs. Buy before you get to the terminal; prices in lei.
💡 Oradea on a Layover — the Art Nouveau Case and the Time Maths
Oradea is not a famous city, which is why its architecture still surprises people. Over the past decade the municipality restored a substantial concentration of Art Nouveau (Secessionist) buildings that had been deteriorating since the mid-20th century. The result is one of the better-preserved Secession ensembles in Central Europe, with enough buildings in reasonable condition to make Piața Unirii a genuinely worthwhile hour.
The centrepiece is the Black Eagle Palace (Palatul Vulturul Negru) on Piața Unirii — a Y-shaped arcade covered by a stained-glass roof, now functioning as a shopping passage. On the same square: the Moon Church (Biserica cu Lună), an Orthodox church whose tower carries an 18th-century mechanical device that tracks and displays the lunar phase. Across the river, the Oradea Fortress is a restored star-shaped Renaissance citadel now used as a cultural complex. Băile Felix, Romania’s largest thermal resort, is about 8 km south of the city; the Nymphaea aquapark is inside Oradea itself.
The layover maths
The airport is 6 km from Piața Unirii, and line 28 is timed to flights. Allow 90 minutes for return transport and pre-security: that is the minimum buffer.
- Under 3 hours — stay airside. There is not enough time to clear the city and return comfortably.
- 3 hours — marginal. A quick look at Piața Unirii and the Black Eagle Palace arcade is possible, but you will be watching the clock.
- 4 hours or more — Piața Unirii, the Black Eagle Palace, and the Moon Church on foot, with a 90-minute return-security buffer. This is the comfortable threshold.
- 5 hours or more — add Băile Felix (8 km south) for a thermal soak. At this length it becomes a genuine half-day; the spa is a destination, not a between-flights stop.
🏛️ Black Eagle Palace — Piața Unirii
The Y-shaped arcade under the stained-glass roof is the anchor stop in Oradea. It is on Piața Unirii, walkable from the bus stop. The restored façades on the surrounding streets extend the walk by 20–30 minutes if time allows.
⏱️ 4 hours is the comfortable layover threshold
Under 4 hours from wheels-down to scheduled departure, the maths gets uncomfortable once you account for 90 minutes of return transport and security. With 4+ hours you can reach Piața Unirii, the Black Eagle Palace, and the Moon Church and return with margin.
🧭 Practical Notes
- Currency — the leu is not the euro. ~5 RON = €1. Cards are accepted widely in the city; the figures are RON.
- Line 28 is timed to flights — confirm the departure time connects with your own, and have the Bolt app loaded as a fallback.
- Schengen land border to Hungary — with Romania in Schengen fully since January 2025, the road crossing into Hungary has no passport checks. Useful if you are continuing by car toward Debrecen or Budapest.
- ETIAS is not yet required — expected Q4 2026 for visa-exempt non-EU nationals (UK, US, Canadian, Australian, etc.). A valid passport is currently sufficient.
