🌍 About Oral
Oral (Uralsk) sits on the Ural River, the conventional line between Europe and Asia, so the city technically straddles both continents. It was founded by Yaik Cossacks and became the headquarters of Pugachev's 1773–75 rebellion; when Catherine II crushed it, she renamed both the town and the river to erase the memory — Yaik became Ural. Pushkin came here in 1833 to research that revolt for *The Captain's Daughter*, and the Pushkin Museum still holds his letters. Pair it with the Pugachev house museum nearby for the full story. Eat beshbarmak, the boiled-meat-and-noodle dish that's the regional staple. Come May to September for warm, dry days; winters drop near −15°C and are genuinely brutal, so the cheap-fare cold months aren't a bargain unless you're hardy.
