🏗️ The Terminal Layout
New SLC is a single central terminal feeding two long parallel concourses — A for Delta, B for everyone else — connected by underground walkway tunnels, one of which has a moving “river tunnel” art installation underfoot. The rebuild is still finishing: eleven additional gates open in October 2026, bringing the airport to 94 total.
The single thing worth knowing before you walk in: the new terminal is long. Getting between Concourse A and Concourse B means going through the tunnels, not across a bridge or a hall, and the walk from security to the far end of either concourse is not short. If you are connecting between a Delta domestic arrival on A and an outbound on B, allow time.

The concourse tunnels are the only link between A and B. A 45-minute connection in New SLC is tighter than it looks on a boarding pass — the new terminal is designed for the future gate count, not the shortest walk.
🛂 Border, Visas & US Entry
This is a standard US port of entry. International arrivals clear US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) after landing.
Visa Waiver Programme (ESTA): Citizens of the UK, most EU countries, Japan, Australia, and other VWP-eligible nations enter on an ESTA approved online before flying — valid for visits up to 90 days. Apply at the official US government ESTA portal before departure; approval is usually fast but leave a day or two of buffer. A valid ESTA is not a guarantee of entry; CBP officers make the final call.
Accelerated entry options: Global Entry, Mobile Passport Control (MPC), and Automated Passport Control (APC) kiosks are available at SLC for eligible arrivals and can cut queue time substantially.
Visa-required nationals need a US visa in advance from a US embassy or consulate — there is no visa-on-arrival option for the United States.

SLC has a real light-rail connection, which is not something you can say about most US airports.
The UTA TRAX Green Line runs from the airport station — a short walk from baggage claim — to downtown Salt Lake City in about 20 minutes for a flat $2.50 one-way. Trains run roughly every 15 minutes on weekdays, from around 5:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., with reduced frequency on weekends. The Green Line connects to the rest of the TRAX network in the city centre, so if you need to get beyond downtown, you can.

Rideshare and taxis cost around $20–30 and take about 15 minutes — the airport sits unusually close to the city for a US airport, which is why cab fares here are modest by American standards. There is no particular reason to choose rideshare over the train unless you have heavy ski bags or need a specific address; the TRAX is straightforward and cheaper.

As a Delta hub, SLC’s best lounges are the Delta Sky Clubs in both Concourse A and Concourse B. The Concourse A club in particular has mountain views, local food options, and showers — above average for a domestic hub club. Access requires Delta Sky Club membership, Platinum or Diamond Medallion status, or an eligible American Express card. If you have Delta access, this is the lounge to use.
🎫 Priority Pass at SLC — lower your expectations
SLC has no traditional sit-down Priority Pass lounge. The PP network here covers Minute Suites (private rooms; Priority Pass covers the first hour) and XpresSpa (one massage session per visit). If you are relying on Priority Pass for a meal and a seat, SLC will not deliver. Eat at the terminal restaurants and use a gate area.
If you are flying Delta and have Sky Club access, you are well served. Everyone else is eating at the gate.
🍽️ Food Before You Fly
Utah has its own food culture that does not map neatly onto the rest of the American West.
Fry sauce is the condiment to try — a pink blend of ketchup and mayonnaise that Utahns put on burgers, fries, and most things fried. It was invented at a Salt Lake burger chain and is a genuine local institution, not a tourist novelty.
The Utah scone is not a British scone and has no relation to one. It is a deep-fried puff of dough served with honey butter, closer to a sopapilla, and it is good.
Dirty soda is a Utah phenomenon: fountain soda mixed with cream and flavoured syrups, sold at dedicated drive-through shops across the state. The culture around it is tied to the low coffee-and-alcohol consumption in Utah and has developed into something genuinely its own. Worth trying once.

Temple Square
Downtown Salt Lake City’s anchor is Temple Square, the ten-acre headquarters block of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, containing the granite Salt Lake Temple, the domed Tabernacle — home of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir — and surrounding gardens. It is open to visitors. The scale of the complex relative to the surrounding city blocks is striking and unlike anything in the American West.
The Wasatch Ski Canyons
The real reason SLC punches above its population in air traffic is the mountains. Alta, Snowbird, Brighton, and Solitude are in the Cottonwood Canyons; Park City is over the ridge. Some resorts are within 40 minutes of the airport, which is why SLC becomes a different kind of airport in ski season — ski-shuttle services run directly from the terminal to the resorts for arriving skiers.
The Great Salt Lake lies west of the airport, not to the east.
Layover Calculation — What Actually Fits
⏱️ The 4-hour layover threshold
TRAX is 20 minutes each way from the airport to Temple Square. A 4-hour layover gets you downtown, 90 minutes at Temple Square and the surrounding blocks, and back to the airport with a 90-minute buffer before your gate. That is the minimum viable downtown excursion.
The ski resorts are not a layover activity. Even at 40 minutes each way, you still need ski rental, a lift ticket, time on the mountain, and the return trip — that is a full day, not a connection. In winter, if you are actually going to ski, shuttle services run from the airport. If you are just connecting, the mountains are visible from the terminal and that will have to be enough.
Under three hours? Stay airside. The long concourse walks in New SLC eat time you do not have.
