Sofia sits right under Vitosha, a 2,290m mountain you can reach by public transport from downtown — locals ski it in winter and hike it in summer, which no other EU capital really offers. The other distinctive thing is the Square of Tolerance: an Orthodox church, a Catholic cathedral, the Banya Bashi Mosque and Europe's third-largest synagogue all within a few minutes' walk. Don't miss the Roman ruins of Serdica, excavated and left open inside the Serdika metro station — you walk past 2nd-century streets to catch a train.
