🏙️ Your Shanghai stopover — two ways to play it

Both fares route through Shanghai Pudong, and both hand you a ~20-hour Shanghai layover on the way home — a full day to leave the airport and see the city before the final leg to Budapest. The real choice is the outbound:

  • €777 (23 Aug) — a single stop with a big ~18-hour Shanghai layover outbound too. That is effectively two full Shanghai days, one at each end of your New Zealand trip. Slower door-to-door (about 41 hours out), but the most city time on one ticket.
  • €784 (24 Aug) — a faster outbound: a short hop via Ningbo (about 3 hours there), then roughly 6 hours at Shanghai Pudong before Auckland — around 33 hours total, two stops. Less time on the ground going out (enough for a quick Maglev-in, Bund-and-back taster), but you reach Auckland sooner and still get the full ~20-hour Shanghai stop coming home.

Either way the long layover is a feature, not a delay. China’s transit visa-exemption — extended in December 2024 to a 240-hour (10-day) stay for eligible nationalities, Hungary included — lets you leave the airport when you’re transiting to a third country, which Budapest–Auckland is in both directions. Confirm the current rules and that your passport qualifies before you count on it.

From Pudong the Maglev hits 300 km/h and reaches the edge of the city in about eight minutes, where Metro Line 2 carries on downtown. With a day in hand: walk the Bund at dusk for the Pudong skyline across the Huangpu, lose an hour in the lanes and dumpling houses around Yuyuan Garden, and slow down under the plane trees of the former French Concession.

🌍 About Auckland
Auckland is the largest Polynesian city in the world, and the most rewarding eating reflects that: skip the harbourside chains and go to the weekend markets in South Auckland (Ōtara) for a Pacific plate — sapasui (Samoan chop suey) or raw fish in coconut cream. The city sits on a field of around 50 volcanic cones. The best one isn't in the city at all: Rangitoto, a symmetrical cone that erupted from the sea only ~600 years ago, is a 25-minute ferry from downtown and a scrambly hike over black lava. Waiheke Island, 40 minutes by ferry, is the wine day-trip. Come December–February for swimming weather, but that's peak season and priciest; March–April keeps the warmth and drops the crowds. June–August is wet and grey.
