The Bahamas is 700-odd islands, but most flights land in Nassau on New Providence. Eat conch (say "konk") — at Arawak Cay, the Fish Fry strip, they dice raw conch salad with onion, pepper and lime right in front of you. The thing worth timing a trip around is Junkanoo: a pre-dawn street parade of cowbells, goatskin drums and towering crepe-paper costumes, rooted in enslaved Africans' Christmas celebrations and biggest on Boxing Day and New Year's morning in Nassau. The famous swimming pigs aren't here — they're a boat ride or short flight south in the Exuma cays. Come December to April for dry, warm days, though that's also peak prices. Cheap summer fares overlap with hurricane season (worst August to October), so a bargain then is a genuine gamble.
