Trapani-Birgi Vincenzo Florio (TPS) Airport Guide 2026 — One Airline, Two Towns, No Train

Trapani-Birgi sits in the comune of Misiliscemi, exactly 15 km from Trapani and 15 km from Marsala on the airport’s own reckoning, and the number that decides your arrival is €35 — the fixed taxi fare to either town, because there is no railway station here and the bus needs a phone call. Ryanair operates 24 of the 25 destinations on the summer timetable; ITA Airways adds Rome and that is the whole of the competition. Traffic fell two years running to 1,007,409 passengers in 2025, then turned hard: Assaeroporti’s cumulative figures to July 2026 are up 28.8%. Italy is Schengen and in the Eurozone. Behind the airport: Erice on its mountain, the salt pans, Segesta, Marsala’s cellars and the hydrofoils to the Egadi.

⚡ 2026 Quick Reference — Key Facts at a Glance

Taxi — the fare that matters
Airgest publishes a fixed €35.00 fare to and from Trapani, and the same €35.00 to and from Marsala. Metered otherwise: €3.00 flagfall, €14.50 minimum fare, €1.50 per km including the return leg, €20.00 per hour of waiting. Rank is directly outside the main terminal doors
Bus to Palermo and to Palermo airport
Autoservizi Salemi, Marsala ↔ Trapani Birgi ↔ Palermo Punta Raisi airportPalermo Via Fazello bus terminal beside the railway station. About 1 h 10 to Punta Raisi and about 1 h 55 to Palermo city on the operator’s own timetable. The fare is not published — buy online or at the airport ticket desk
Bus to Trapani city
The airport names AST (+39 0923 21021) as the operator and sells tickets at the airport ticket desk. AST publishes no Birgi line page and no fare. Phone before you plan around it
Trains
There is no station at the airport. Airgest states the airport is equidistant from the Trapani and Marsala stations; both are reached by bus or taxi
Hydrofoils to the Egadi
From Trapani port, not the airport. Liberty Lines (+39 0923 873813) to Favignana, Levanzo and Marettimo, plus Naples and Ustica; Siremar to Pantelleria. On the timetable in force from 1 June 2026 there are 19 Trapani–Favignana departures a day

🏢 1. One Terminal, One Airline, and a Route Map That Fell Then Bounced

Trapani-Birgi is a military airport open to civil national and international traffic — Airgest says so in its own technical data, and it explains a lot about the place. The civil terminal is a tenant on an air force base. The apron feels oversized, the landside is compact, and the whole operation runs on a single runway, 13R/31L, 2,695 metres by 45, with PAPI and a simplified approach lighting system, on a 123-hectare site 7.6 metres above the sea.

The terminal has about 11,000 m² open to the public. Ground floor: check-in desks, waiting areas, baggage reclaim, the sala amica, the rent-a-car offices, airport services and first aid. Departures are upstairs on the first floor, with the gates for both domestic and international flights and about 800 m² given over to food and retail. There are phone-charging totems in both departures and arrivals, and free airport Wi-Fi.

One structural fact to plan around: the passenger terminal closes every day from 00:30 to 04:30. The airfield itself operates 04:30–00:30, H24 on request. If your Ryanair flight lands at 00:20 you will be pushed out of a building that is about to shut, at an airport 15 km from anywhere, at an hour when nothing is running. Book the taxi.

The traffic, honestly

Airgest publishes its own numbers, and Assaeroporti — the Italian airport operators’ association — publishes the running total for 2026. Read together they tell a two-part story:

Year Passengers Domestic International Movements
2022 891,670 637,212 252,980 8,918
2023 1,332,368 924,174 400,964 10,666
2024 1,074,939 760,797 310,191 9,016
2025 1,007,409 758,542 246,003 8,476
2026, Jan–Jul 742,790 (+28.8%) 6,036 (+24.2%)

Two things matter here. First, the 2023–2025 fall was almost entirely international: that column dropped by nearly 40% while the domestic column barely moved, which is how Trapani turned into a mostly-domestic airport with a European fringe. Second, 2026 has reversed the trend sharply — Assaeroporti’s cumulative total to July is 742,790 passengers, up 28.8% year on year, on movements up 24.2%. That is a bigger summer Ryanair programme, not a structural change, and Assaeroporti does not split the running total into domestic and international. Do not assume the 2025 shape still holds; do assume the airport is busier in July than the 2025 annual figure suggests.

Who actually flies here — and a contradiction worth knowing

The airport contradicts itself on this, so here is both sides. Airgest’s “Compagnie operative” page lists exactly two carriers: Ryanair and DAT (Danish Air Transport). Airgest’s own seasonal timetable for summer 2026 shows three, and DAT is not among them: Ryanair, ITA Airways and Hello Fly. Trust the timetable — it is the surface with dates on it — but check your specific flight with the airline.

The summer 2026 season runs 28 April to 31 October, with 25 destinations: 11 in Italy and 14 in Europe.

  • Ryanair flies 24 of the 25. Italy: Bergamo, Rome Fiumicino, Bologna, Pisa, Turin, Pescara, Venice, Milan Malpensa, Verona, Bari. Europe: London Stansted, Manchester, Bournemouth, Brussels Charleroi, Porto, Seville, Malta, Stockholm Arlanda, Katowice, Lublin, Bratislava, Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden, Weeze, Saarbrücken. The fleet on the timetable is Boeing 737-800s and 737 MAX 8s.
  • ITA Airways flies one route, Rome Fiumicino — the only destination at this airport with a second carrier, and therefore the only one with any competitive tension in the fare.
  • Hello Fly operated Lampedusa on a summer-only window that the timetable closed in early September. Outside that window Trapani has no Lampedusa service; check the airport’s seasonal timetable pages before assuming one.

Read off that timetable, the shape is stark: Bergamo, Rome and Bologna are the only routes with more than one departure on most days. About half the European routes run roughly twice a week. Stockholm, Bournemouth, Saarbrücken, Lublin, Seville, Porto, Manchester and Stansted are all in that twice-weekly band, which means a missed flight is not a “catch the next one” problem — it is a three-day problem.

Winter is smaller again. Airgest publishes a separate winter timetable; on last winter’s, the network was down to about a dozen destinations and Ryanair was the only carrier. Check the current winter page rather than assuming a summer route survives October.

Because this is a one-airline airport, the cabin bag usually decides the real fare. Price it honestly with our baggage fee checker and read the detail in the Ryanair baggage allowance guide or, for the Rome route, the ITA Airways baggage allowance guide. Then run the fare comparison with our flight price checker before you assume Trapani beats Palermo — section 6 explains when it does not.

🛂 2. Schengen and the Euro, at an Airport Where Three Quarters of Passengers Never Cross a Border

Italy is in the Schengen area and it uses the euro. Two separate memberships; Italy holds both, so for a passenger arriving from another Schengen country there is no passport control at all and no currency to change.

That describes most people here. In 2025, 758,542 of 1,007,409 passengers were on domestic flights — Bergamo, Rome, Bologna, Pisa, Turin. Those passengers walk off the aircraft and out of the building.

For everyone else, the EU Entry/Exit System (EES) matters. The European Commission states plainly that EES became fully operational on 10 April 2026, completing a progressive roll-out that began in October 2025. It replaces the passport stamp with a digital record: non-EU nationals on a short stay (90 days in any 180) have their facial image, fingerprints and travel-document data captured on first crossing, then a faster biometric check on later crossings while that record stands. Refusals of entry are recorded too. Airgest carries its own EES explainer and lists the European countries that operate the system.

At Trapani the traffic most affected is British: London Stansted, Manchester and Bournemouth, all Ryanair, plus the UK connections people build through Malta or Stansted. On a first entry, allow extra time — the biometric enrolment is slower than a stamp, and at a terminal this size two arriving aircraft is a queue. On departure to a non-Schengen destination the exit check is now an EES transaction as well, so arrive when the airline tells you to.

ETIAS is not in operation. The Commission’s Smart Borders page states that ETIAS is currently not running and that no applications for travel authorisations are being collected, and that the EU will announce the start date several months before launch. The fee is set at €20, with under-18s, over-70s and qualifying family members of EU citizens exempt from the fee but still needing an authorisation once it starts. Anyone selling you an Italian ETIAS today is selling nothing.

On money: the euro is universal, cards are accepted in Trapani, Marsala and Erice, but Sicily still runs on cash at the margins — small cantine, island kiosks, the odd taxi and the bus driver. Draw euros from a bank ATM in town rather than an airport bureau, and carry a small float before you get on a hydrofoil.

🚌 3. No Train, One Bus You Must Phone About, and a €35 Taxi

Start with the fact everything else hangs off: there is no railway station at Trapani-Birgi. Airgest’s own wording is that the airport is equidistant from the Trapani and Marsala stations — a polite way of saying it serves neither. Every rail journey in western Sicily begins with a road transfer.

The taxi, which is the honest default

Airgest publishes the tariff, which is unusual and useful. The rank is outside the main terminal doors. The service runs under the rules of the comuni of Trapani and Marsala:

  • Flagfall €3.00
  • Minimum fare €14.50
  • €1.50 per kilometre, inclusive of the return leg
  • Waiting €20.00 per hour, prorated
  • Fixed fare to and from Trapani: €35.00
  • Fixed fare to and from Marsala: €35.00

That fixed €35 is the number to plan on. Split two or three ways it is unremarkable; alone, on a short trip, it is a real cost in both directions. Radio Taxi is on 0923 0880; in Trapani the port rank is 0923 23233 and the station rank 0923 22808; Radio Taxi Trapani/ItTaxi is +39 0923 198 69 69 and Radio Taxi 1852 is +39 0923 1852, both with apps.

The Palermo bus, which is genuinely good

Autoservizi Salemi runs the line that makes this airport work: Marsala → Trapani Birgi airport → Palermo Punta Raisi airport → Palermo Via Fazello bus terminal, beside Palermo’s railway station. Salemi calls it the only direct link between Sicily’s two western airports, and it is.

From the airport bus area, on Salemi’s own published timetable, the run takes about 1 h 10 to Punta Raisi and about 1 h 55 to Palermo city. Marsala is about 20 minutes from the airport on the inbound runs and about 40 minutes on the return timetable, which uses a different routing. Weekday departures are spread from very early morning to late evening, but individual runs operate on named days — some Monday-to-Friday, some only Tuesday and Thursday, some Saturdays only — so read the day column, not just the times. Sundays are thin: five departures from the airport.

Two traps. First, Salemi does not publish the fare on the timetable; buy online at autoservizisalemi.it, through the booking centre on +39 0923 981120, or at the airport ticket office. Second, printed on the timetable itself: the service does not carry passengers between Punta Raisi airport and Palermo city in either direction, so you cannot use it as a Palermo airport shuttle.

The Trapani bus, and why you should phone

Airgest lists AST (Azienda Siciliana Trasporti) as the operator of the Trapani link, on +39 0923 21021, with tickets sold at the airport ticket desk. That is where the verifiable trail stops: AST’s own website has no Birgi line page, no timetable and no fare for this service. For a 15 km hop that is the single weakest link in the whole arrival, so do not build a tight connection on it. Phone AST or the airport, or take the taxi.

Autolinee Lumia (+39 0922 20414) runs the Agrigento service, and Airgest also names Sciacca among the destinations reachable by scheduled bus from the airport.

Driving and parking

The airport calls itself a city-airport and it behaves like one: straight onto the provincial road network, with the A29 and A19 for Palermo and Catania and the superstrada for Agrigento. Car hire desks are on the ground floor.

Car park P1 has 672 spaces directly opposite the terminal and is open 24 hours, with 16 free marked bays outside the entrance for blue-badge holders. Airgest’s published tariffs:

Duration Price
Up to 1 hour €1.00
1–2 hours €3.00
2–5 hours €7.00
5–9 hours €9.00
9–16 hours €11.00
Up to 1 day €15.00
Up to 2 days €26.00
Up to 3 days €35.00
Each further day €8.00

Book online or through the Trapani Airport Parking app; there is a 15-minute grace period after payment, and a lost ticket costs €150.

And then the boats

The hydrofoils leave from Trapani port, not the airport, which is the other reason you need that first transfer. Liberty Lines (+39 0923 873813) runs Trapani to Favignana, Levanzo and Marettimo, and also Naples and Ustica; Siremar runs Trapani to Pantelleria. On the Egadi timetable in force from 1 June 2026, Trapani lists 19 departures a day to Favignana, 16 to Levanzo and 7 to Marettimo, from about 06:50 to 21:00. Liberty Lines states that its fares are set by its public service contract with the regional and national government and are only shown in its online booking, so price your crossing there rather than trusting a third-party figure. Marsala also has sailings to Favignana, which is worth knowing if you are staying at the southern end.

🛋️ 4. No Lounge You Can Buy, and 800 Square Metres of Shops

There is no lounge here in any sense a traveller can act on. Priority Pass’s Italy directory lists nineteen airports — Rome Fiumicino, Milan Malpensa, Linate and Bergamo, Naples, Venice, Bologna, Florence, Pisa, Turin, Verona, Trieste, Bari, Brindisi, Cagliari, Olbia, Alghero, Catania and Palermo — and Trapani is not among them. No carrier based here operates a premium cabin, so there is no airline lounge either.

Airgest’s terminal description does mention a sala VIP in the first-floor departures area. It publishes no access conditions, no price and no opening hours for it, and there is no booking path on the site. Treat it as something that may be arranged through a handling agent or a charter, not as a facility you can walk up and buy. If you want a quiet hour before a Ryanair flight, you are having it in a café chair.

What is actually upstairs is the 800 m² of food, beverage and retail in departures, with Airgest making a point of the local food and non-food products of the Trapani area. Downstairs there is seating, a newsagent, a tobacconist and vending machines. Wi-Fi is free.

Two practical notes. The airport holds Airport Carbon Accreditation at Level 2, which is a real certification rather than a slogan, and it does not affect your journey in the slightest. And because the terminal shuts between 00:30 and 04:30, an early-morning departure means arriving with the doors, not before them.

🍽️ 5. Do Not Eat at the Airport. Eat in Trapani, Erice or Marsala

Western Sicily has one of the most distinct kitchens in Italy and none of it is in the terminal. Eat before you fly or after you land.

  • Couscous alla trapanese — the province’s signature dish, a fish couscous steamed rather than boiled, served with a broth poured over at the table. It is the clearest surviving trace of North Africa on this coast, and it is what Trapani is for. San Vito Lo Capo, 50 km up the coast on Airgest’s reckoning, is where you eat it beside the sea.
  • Busiate al pesto alla trapanese — a hand-twisted pasta with a raw pesto of almonds, tomato, basil and garlic. Order it once in Trapani and once in Erice and you will get two different versions.
  • Sea salt from the Saline — the salt pans between Trapani and Marsala are a protected nature reserve, and the coarse and fine sea salt from them is the single best thing to carry home. It weighs nothing in a cabin bag and it is genuinely better than what you have.
  • Tuna — the Egadi were built on it. Favignana still has its old tonnara, the tuna-processing works, alongside Villa Florio and its archaeological museum.
  • Marsala — the fortified wine and the town share a name, and the town is 15 km from the runway. The cellars run tastings; dry Marsala with almonds before dinner is a very different drink from the sweet stuff that ends up in a tiramisù.
  • Erice’s pastry shops — almond and marzipan work is the mountain town’s speciality, and those shops are why so many people on the cable car are carrying boxes on the way down.

For airport-side eating, the departures area upstairs is the better of the two options and the ground-floor offer is a newsagent, a tobacconist and machines. Do not plan a meal here.

💡 6. Insider: When Trapani Beats Palermo, and What West Sicily Is Actually For

The Palermo question, done with numbers

Trapani and Palermo Punta Raisi are one bus apart, about 1 h 10 on Salemi’s timetable, and Punta Raisi is a far larger airport with far more carriers. So the comparison is real, and it goes both ways:

  • Fly into Trapani if western Sicily is the trip — Trapani, Erice, Marsala, the Egadi, Segesta, Selinunte, San Vito Lo Capo, Mozia. You are already there, and Punta Raisi would be a detour of an hour and a half in the wrong direction.
  • Fly into Palermo if you need choice, a legacy carrier, a connection, or a specific arrival time. Trapani has one airline on 24 of its 25 routes, no interlining, and about half of its European network on a twice-a-week frequency. A disruption here has no next flight.
  • Do the arithmetic on the ground leg too. A Trapani arrival costs you €35 by taxi into Trapani or Marsala, in each direction, unless the AST bus happens to line up. That is €70 per party, not per person — which makes Trapani much better value for a couple or a family than the per-person coach fares at other low-cost airports.

The honest summary: Trapani is not a cheap back door to Palermo. It is the front door to the western third of the island, and it should be judged on that.

Erice, and the best €15 in the province

Erice is a walled medieval town on a mountain above Trapani, and Airgest puts it 23 km from the airport. Do not drive up. The Trapani–Erice cableway climbs from a valley station at about 40 m above sea level in Erice’s Casa Santa district to an upper station at 703 m, over a 3,099-metre line, in ten minutes, in eight-seat cabins that run continuously and take bicycles and wheelchairs.

Published fares: €9.00 one way, €15.00 return; €2.50/€4.00 for children aged 3–16; €4.00/€6.50 for residents of the province of Trapani; a ten-ride pass at €32.00. The two customer car parks in front of the valley station charge €5.00 for the first three hours and €1.00 an hour after that.

The ride is the point as much as the town: the view back over Trapani’s spit, the salt pans and the Egadi is the single best panorama in the province, and it is included in the ticket. The system has night lighting, so an evening return is a genuine option.

Segesta, and the temple on the hill

Segesta sits inland near Calatafimi, in the Trapani province, and it is the archaeological site to choose if you only have one afternoon. The Doric temple stands alone on a hillside with no town around it; the theatre is cut into the slope above, looking out towards the sea. The Parco Archeologico di Segesta also administers other sites across the province — Rocca di Entella, Mokarta, Monte Castellazzo, the Grotte Scurati caves at Custonaci and the paleochristian basilica of San Miceli near Salemi — so if archaeology is the trip, that one park is your itinerary. Ticketing runs through the park (+39 0924 954665).

The islands, and how not to get this wrong

The Egadi are the reason a lot of people fly here, and the sequence is: airport → Trapani port → hydrofoil. Two separate legs, and the port is not the airport.

Favignana is the largest and the best connected — the timetable in force from 1 June 2026 lists 19 sailings a day from Trapani, which is frequent enough that you can go for a day without planning. The island is flat and small enough to do on a bicycle, which is how everyone does it, and the coves — Cala Rossa’s rock, Cala Azzurra’s white sand — are the draw. Levanzo is smaller and quieter, with 16 sailings. Marettimo is furthest out with 7 a day and the fewest beds; it is the one that rewards staying overnight and punishes a day trip.

Practical rules: the last boat back is earlier than you think, hydrofoils are weather-cancellable, and Liberty Lines only shows fares in its own booking system. Book the return leg, not just the outbound.

The rest of the province, in one paragraph

The airport’s own list of what it is near is a good itinerary: Segesta, San Vito Lo Capo (50 km, the beach and the couscous), Selinunte and Mazara del Vallo south along the coast, Mozia — the Phoenician island in the Marsala lagoon — and the Saline di Trapani e Paceco nature reserve, whose windmills and salt pans are best at sunset, plus the Tonnara di Scopello with its sea stacks. Almost none of this is reachable on public transport in a way that respects your holiday. If your trip is the province rather than one town, hire a car at the airport — the desks are on the ground floor and the road network is the one genuinely good piece of infrastructure here.

The verdict

TPS is a small, plain, military-adjacent terminal with one airline, no train, no lounge you can buy, and a door that locks at half past midnight. It is also fifteen kilometres from Trapani, fifteen from Marsala, twenty-three from Erice and one bus from Palermo, in the corner of Sicily with the salt pans, the Doric temple, the tuna islands and the wine. Fly here for western Sicily and rent a car. Fly to Palermo if you need the airport itself to do anything for you.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get from Trapani-Birgi airport to Trapani city centre? +
There is no railway station at the airport, so it is a taxi or a bus. Airgest publishes a fixed taxi fare of €35.00 to and from Trapani, from the rank outside the main doors; the meter otherwise runs €3.00 flagfall, €14.50 minimum and €1.50 per kilometre including the return leg. The airport names AST (+39 0923 21021) as the bus operator and sells tickets at its ticket desk, but AST publishes no line page, timetable or fare — phone before you rely on it.
How do I get from Trapani airport to Palermo? +
Autoservizi Salemi runs Marsala ↔ Trapani Birgi airport ↔ Palermo Punta Raisi airport ↔ Palermo’s Via Fazello bus terminal beside the railway station — the only direct link between Sicily’s two western airports. On the operator’s own timetable it is about 1 h 10 to Punta Raisi and about 1 h 55 to Palermo city. Individual runs operate on named days, Sundays have five departures, and the fare is not published: buy online, through +39 0923 981120, or at the airport desk.
How do I get from Trapani airport to Favignana and the Egadi islands? +
Two legs, and the first is by road. The hydrofoils leave from Trapani port, 15 km from the airport, not from the airport itself. Liberty Lines (+39 0923 873813) sails to Favignana, Levanzo and Marettimo; on the timetable in force from 1 June 2026 there are 19 daily Trapani–Favignana departures, 16 to Levanzo and 7 to Marettimo, running from about 06:50 to 21:00. Liberty Lines only shows fares inside its own booking system, so price the crossing there and book the return leg too.
How do I get up to Erice from Trapani, and what does the cable car cost? +
Take the Trapani–Erice cableway rather than driving. It climbs from a valley station at about 40 metres above sea level in Erice’s Casa Santa district to an upper station at 703 metres, over a 3,099-metre line, in ten minutes, in eight-seat cabins that also carry bicycles and wheelchairs. Published fares are €9.00 one way and €15.00 return, €2.50/€4.00 for children aged 3–16. The two customer car parks at the valley station charge €5.00 for the first three hours.
Which airlines fly to Trapani-Birgi, and where can I fly from there? +
The airport contradicts itself: its airline page lists Ryanair and DAT, while its own summer 2026 timetable shows Ryanair, ITA Airways and Hello Fly. Trust the timetable. Ryanair operates 24 of the 25 summer destinations, ITA Airways flies only Rome Fiumicino, and Hello Fly ran a summer-only Lampedusa route. Bergamo, Rome and Bologna are the only routes with more than one departure most days; about half the European routes run roughly twice a week.
Do I need an ETIAS for Italy in 2026, and does EES apply at Trapani? +
ETIAS is not in operation. The European Commission states it is currently not running and that no applications for travel authorisations are being collected, with the start date to be announced several months in advance; the fee is set at €20, with under-18s, over-70s and qualifying family members of EU citizens fee-exempt. EES does apply — the EU Entry/Exit System became fully operational on 10 April 2026, capturing face, fingerprints and document data from non-EU short-stay travellers on first entry.
What currency does Trapani use, and do I need cash? +
Italy is in the Eurozone, so the currency is the euro (€) — no conversion if you arrive from another euro country. Italy is also in Schengen, but that is a separate membership from the currency. Cards work in Trapani, Marsala and Erice, but western Sicily still runs on cash at the edges: small cellars, island kiosks, bus drivers and market stalls. Draw euros from a bank ATM in town rather than an airport bureau, and carry a float before boarding a hydrofoil.
Is there a lounge at Trapani airport, and when does the terminal close? +
There is no lounge you can buy. Priority Pass lists nineteen Italian airports and Trapani is not among them, and no carrier here operates a premium cabin. Airgest’s terminal page mentions a sala VIP in first-floor departures but publishes no price, hours or booking path. More important for planning: the passenger terminal closes daily from 00:30 to 04:30, so a very late arrival or a pre-dawn departure means being outside the building.
