🌍 About Nouakchott
Nouakchott barely existed in 1958 — it was built from near-nothing to be the capital of a newly independent country, so don't come for old quarters or monuments; there aren't any. Come for the Port de Pêche, the beach fish market where wooden pirogues, each hand-painted in different colors, get hauled straight out of the Atlantic surf and gutted on the sand in the afternoon when the boats return. It's loud, chaotic, and the most alive place in the city; watch your pockets. Eat thieboudienne — fish, rice, and vegetables cooked in one pot, the Mauritanian staple shared with Senegal next door. Visit November to February, when days sit around 25°C. Skip April–May, when the harmattan blankets everything in fine Saharan dust.
