🌍 About Montreal

Montreal runs on French — this is Quebec, where the default greeting is "bonjour" and the café culture leans more Parisian than Canadian. Skip the poutine debate and go to Mile End for the bagels: St-Viateur and Fairmount boil theirs in honey water, then bake in wood-fired ovens that never go out, giving a bagel that's smaller, sweeter and denser than New York's — eat one warm and plain. For the meat, Schwartz's hand-cut smoked-meat sandwich is the real thing and worth the line. Come mid-May to September for terrasse weather and the festival run: the Jazz Festival in late June, Just for Laughs in July. January and February are genuinely brutal; the heated Underground City is a survival trick, not a sight.
