Air Transat Baggage Allowance 2026: Cabin, Checked & Fees

✓ Policy web-verified 2026-06-20

Air Transat’s cheapest fare is Eco Budget, and what it gets you depends entirely on where you’re flying. On every route it includes zero checked bags — but the carry-on situation splits by region. On Sun, Caribbean, US and domestic-Canada routes, Air Transat stripped the free carry-on from Eco Budget in February 2025: you get only a personal item that fits under the seat, and a full-size cabin bag costs extra. On flights to and from Europe (plus Morocco and Peru), Eco Budget still includes a free carry-on bag — those routes were deliberately left out of the change.

So don’t assume “cheapest fare = no carry-on” across the board, and never assume a free checked bag — Eco Budget has none anywhere. The next fare up, Eco Standard, restores the carry-on everywhere and adds one free 23 kg checked bag. Eco Flex bumps that to two checked bags with free changes, and Club Class gives two 32 kg bags plus a heavier 15 kg cabin allowance.

What you actually get on a cheap fare

On a cheap Air Transat Eco Budget deal fare, budget for a bag. No fare tier of Eco Budget includes a checked bag, so on a transatlantic Europe run you’ll have a free carry-on but still pay $35 CAD prepaid (rising to $40 at the airport) for your first checked bag — always add it online, the airport surcharge is pure waste. Need two bags? That’s roughly $90 CAD prepaid on top of the headline fare.

On Sun, US and domestic Eco Budget fares the squeeze is worse: you get nothing but a small under-seat personal item. A real cabin bag is a paid add-on, and a checked bag is another. At that point compare the all-in price against Eco Standard, which folds in both a carry-on and one 23 kg checked bag — for a one-week trip with luggage it’s frequently cheaper than buying the extras à la carte on top of Eco Budget.

Oversize, sports & special items

Sports and oversize gear: golf clubs, skis and bikes generally travel as a standard checked bag — about $35+ CAD when prepaid — provided they’re within the 23 kg / 158 cm limits; beyond that the ~$100 CAD overweight/oversize charge applies and is airport-only. Bags can run up to 292 cm linear before being refused as cargo.

2025/2026 change to know: in February 2025 Air Transat removed the free carry-on from Eco Budget on flights to/from the South (excluding Peru), the United States and within Canada — these passengers now get only a personal item unless they pay or upgrade. Crucially, Europe, Morocco and Peru routes and all-inclusive packages were exempted and kept the free Eco Budget carry-on.

Frequently asked questions

Does Air Transat's cheapest Eco Budget fare include a checked bag?

No. Eco Budget includes zero checked bags on every route. You’ll pay around $35 CAD prepaid ($40 at the airport) to add your first bag, or step up to Eco Standard, which includes one 23 kg bag.

Do I get a free carry-on with Eco Budget?

It depends on the route. To and from Europe, Morocco and Peru, Eco Budget still includes a free carry-on bag. On Sun, Caribbean, US and domestic-Canada routes, Air Transat removed the free carry-on from Eco Budget in February 2025 — you get only an under-seat personal item.

What size personal item can I bring for free?

One personal item up to 43 x 13 x 31 cm that fits under the seat in front of you. This is free on all fares and all routes, including Eco Budget.

What are the carry-on bag size and weight limits?

Up to 55 x 40 x 23 cm including handles and wheels, max 10 kg in Economy (15 kg in Club Class). It’s included from Eco Standard up; on Eco Budget it’s only free on Europe/Morocco/Peru routes.

How much does a checked bag cost on Air Transat?

The first checked bag is about $35 CAD prepaid online or $40 CAD at the airport; the second is roughly $55 CAD prepaid or $70 at the airport. Always prepay — the airport price is higher. Standard checked weight limit is 23 kg.

Is the baggage policy different for Europe flights?

Yes. Europe (along with Morocco and Peru) was exempt from the February 2025 carry-on cuts, so Eco Budget there keeps a free carry-on. The checked-bag rules are the same everywhere: Eco Budget includes none, Eco Standard one, Eco Flex two.

How many bags does Club Class include?

Club Class includes a personal item, a 15 kg carry-on and two checked bags of up to 32 kg each — the most generous allowance Air Transat offers.

What happens if my bag is overweight or oversized?

Bags over 23 kg or above 158 cm linear (up to 292 cm) incur an overweight/oversize fee of around $100 CAD each, charged only at the airport — you cannot prepay it. Pack to 23 kg to avoid it.

Can I bring sports equipment like golf clubs or skis?

Yes. Sports gear usually counts as a standard checked bag (about $35+ CAD prepaid) as long as it’s within the weight and size limits; otherwise the oversize/overweight surcharge applies.
