🌍 About São Vicente

Mindelo is Cape Verde's music town. It's the birthplace of Cesária Évora, the barefoot diva, and the home of morna — the slow, saudade-soaked Creole song now on UNESCO's heritage list. Bars around the Porto Grande waterfront have live music most nights, and it's not put on for tourists. Time a trip to February for the Carnival, the biggest in the islands: Brazilian-scale parades plus the Mandinga groups, men in black body paint that's specific to São Vicente. Eat cachupa, the corn-and-bean stew that's the national dish — order it "rica" with meat, or fried with an egg on top for breakfast. The dry season runs December to May, sunny and around 25°C; that's also Carnival season, so book early.
