Sarajevo's strangest sight isn't a building — it's a line in the pavement on Ferhadija street marked "Sarajevo Meeting of Cultures." Walk west from the Baščaršija bazaar and in about 200 metres the city flips from Ottoman copper-workshops and the Sebilj fountain to Austro-Hungarian facades: two empires, same street. A few blocks south is the Latin Bridge, where the 1914 assassination of Franz Ferdinand lit the fuse for WWI. Eat ćevapi — small grilled beef sausages served in soft somun bread with raw onion; order the ten-piece. Bosnian coffee comes with a copper pot and a cube of rahat lokum, not espresso. Come May–June or September for mild days and thinner crowds. July and August are warmest and busiest (Baščaršija Nights, the Film Festival); winter is cold but cheap, with 1984-Olympic ski slopes 30 minutes out.
