Antananarivo — "Tana" to everyone who lives there — climbs across twelve hills in Madagascar's central highlands, with stairways instead of streets linking the levels and rice paddies running right up to the edge of town. Head for the Haute-Ville, the old upper city, where the Rova crowns the highest hill: the stone palace of the Merina queens, visible from almost anywhere, with views over red-brick houses and paddies in every direction.
