Nador sits on the Mediterranean in Morocco's Rif, a Tarifit-speaking Berber region, and its defining feature is the Marchica — a 25km lagoon almost enclosed from the sea, right at the city's edge. Flamingos, herons and avocets feed in the shallows; you can kayak or paddleboard it rather than just look at it. This is a fishing town, so eat the morning catch grilled plainly at the port, not an inland tagine. Mount Gourougou, 30 minutes out at ~900m, gives you Barbary macaques and a view over the whole lagoon. The Spanish enclave of Melilla is right next door, which colours the food and the bilingual signage. Come May–June or September–October: water still 22–24°C, far fewer people than the August peak, when Moroccan-diaspora families pack the coast.
