Barcelona just finished its defining landmark: in February 2026 the Sagrada Família topped out at 172.5 metres, making Gaudí's basilica the tallest church in the world after more than 140 years of building (the Glory façade is still going, due around 2034). Walk the Eixample to see Ildefons Cerdà's 19th-century grid — every block has chamfered, octagonal corners, cut so carts and trams could turn. Eat pa amb tomàquet, bread rubbed with ripe tomato, garlic and olive oil; paella is Valencian, not Catalan, so order fideuà if you want the local rice-and-noodle dish instead. Come May–June or September–October for warm days without the worst crowds. Skip August: it's hot, packed, and half the city decamps to the coast, shutting neighbourhood bars and kitchens.
