🌍 About Anchorage
Anchorage sits between the Chugach Mountains and Cook Inlet, but the thing that surprises people is Ship Creek: a tidal creek a few minutes' walk from downtown hotels where you can watch — or join — anglers hauling out king and silver salmon in summer. Eat reindeer sausage from the downtown food carts, a foot-long topped with grilled onions; it's genuinely the local thing, not a gimmick. Skip the generic seafood platters and order fresh halibut instead. Come June to August for the absurd daylight — around 22 hours at the June 21 solstice, enough to fish in the morning and still walk the coast at 10pm. That's also peak season, so fares and rooms cost the most. Winter is cold and dark but cheap, and the trade-off is real northern-lights nights.
