🌍 About Bodø
Bodø is the practical capital of northern Norway above the Arctic Circle — and the gateway to the most scenic way into Lofoten, the 3-hour car ferry across the Vestfjord to Moskenes at the southern tip of the archipelago. The city itself was bombed flat in 1940 and rebuilt with the bold modernist Bodø Domkirke at its centre; in 2024 it served as European Capital of Culture, drawing attention to its Arctic-edge identity. Just 30 minutes from the airport sits Saltstraumen, the strongest tidal maelstrom on Earth — 400 million cubic metres of seawater funnel through a 150-metre-wide strait every six hours, hitting whirlpools 10 metres across that locals raft and dive. North of the city, the perfectly preserved 19th-century trading post of Kjerringøy stands on a stretch of coastline that inspired Knut Hamsun's Nobel-winning novels. The Midnight Sun begins around 31 May and runs until mid-July; the Northern Lights return from late August. Bodø is also genuinely walkable — the terminal is 15 minutes on foot from the city centre, saving the taxi fare most Arctic airports demand.
