Windhoek sits at 1,700m on the edge of the Kalahari, which is why even summer nights are cool and the light is desert-sharp. The thing to eat is kapana — strips of beef grilled over open coals at the Oshetu market (Single Quarters) in Katutura township, handed to you on butcher paper to dip in a chili-salt spice mix. Go where the locals are crowding; the busiest grill is busy for a reason. Downtown, the Christuskirche is the obvious landmark: a small German Lutheran church from the colonial era, neo-Romanesque with Art Nouveau touches, on a rise next to the Independence Memorial Museum. Come June to August — dry, mild days around 20-25°C, cold nights, no rain, and the gateway season for safari trips north. Skip November to March, when the rains and heat arrive.
