55 eligible nationalities including US, UK, Canada, EU member states, Australia, NZ, Japan, South Korea, Singapore. Stay max 10 days from 00:00 the day after entry. Must have onward ticket to a third country/region. Apply at the airport entry desk on arrival; no online pre-registration.

L-Visa for Non-TWOV Travel

For non-eligible nationalities, stays over 10 days, or itineraries returning to country of origin: apply for a Chinese L-visa at the nearest embassy or Chinese Visa Application Service Center (CVASC). USD 30-80; processing 4-10 working days.

CNY — Mobile-Payment Dominant

Currency is the Chinese yuan (CNY / RMB / 人民币). $1 ≈ CNY 7.2 (May 2026). WeChat Pay and Alipay dominate — install before arrival and verify foreign-card linkage in advance. Cash works; Visa/Mastercard accepted at upmarket hotels and chain shops. Bank ATMs at the airport accept foreign cards.

⭐ Airport Shuttle Bus — Lines 1 + 2

• Two scheduled airport shuttle routes serve central Ningbo from outside arrivals.
• Fare: CNY 12 (~$1.70) per passenger.
• Frequency: every ~30 minutes; journey ~40 minutes to downtown stops.
• Routes serve Tianyi Square (the central commercial district), the Ningbo Railway Station, and selected major hotel-clusters. Pay cash or WeChat/Alipay to the driver.

🚇 Metro Line 2 — via Lishe Airport Station

• The nearest Metro Line 2 station is Lishe International Airport Station, about 2 km from the terminal — accessible by short shuttle bus or a 30-minute walk.
• Journey from Lishe Airport Station to downtown: 9 stops, ~22 minutes.
• Fare: approximately CNY 5 to central Ningbo, paid by ticket machine, WeChat/Alipay, or the Yongchengtong city transit card.
• Less convenient than the dedicated shuttle bus due to the station’s distance from the terminal — useful primarily for travellers heading to specific Line 2 stops or transferring within the metro network.

📱 Didi (滴滴) — Chinese Ride-Hail

• Didi has dedicated pickup zones at NGB. Fare to downtown: CNY 40-70 (~$5.50-10), journey ~30 minutes.
• Payment via WeChat Pay or Alipay (international cards supported via tourist linkage).
• Install before arrival and verify your account.

🚕 Metered Taxi

• Yellow metered taxis at the rank outside arrivals. Fare to downtown: CNY 50-90.
• Use the official rank only — refuse drivers approaching inside the terminal.
• Mandarin only; have your hotel address written in Chinese characters.

🚆 High-Speed Rail Connection — Onward to Shanghai & Hangzhou

• Ningbo Railway Station is the city’s high-speed-rail hub — 30 minutes from NGB by shuttle bus.
• Ningbo to Hangzhou: ~1 hour on the high-speed rail (CNY 60-120 second class).
• Ningbo to Shanghai Hongqiao (SHA): ~2 hours (CNY 120-220 second class).
• For onward connections to Western Europe, North America, or Oceania, transferring via Shanghai PVG is often the operating reality.

Yellow croaker (large or small) is Ningbo’s signature fish — steamed whole with ginger, scallions, and a soy-based clear sauce. The traditional preparation lets the flesh quality speak for itself. Major restaurants serve it at CNY 100-300 (~$14-42) per fish depending on size and seasonality (the wild large yellow croaker is now significantly rarer and pricier than the farmed alternative).

Tangyuan — sweet rice-flour dumplings in clear syrup — are Ningbo’s most-exported food tradition. The classic black sesame filling (xiema tangyuan) is the textbook Ningbo version, served warm in a sweet clear soup. The brand “Saiwaiwaiwai” (赛霸王) and the historical addresses on Yuehu Lake are the classic destinations. CNY 15-30.

The autumn hairy-crab season (October-December) is Ningbo’s high tourism food season; year-round mantis shrimp, prawn, and sea cucumber dishes form the bulk of local seafood menus. Restaurant prices vary widely — expect CNY 200-600 per person at a quality seafood address.

Made from glutinous rice and the soft local water in Shaoxing (an hour from Ningbo by high-speed rail), Shaoxing wine (huangjiu) is China’s classic fermented-rice wine — pale amber, 14-18% ABV, drunk warm or used in cooking. The major brands (Pagoda 塔牌, Gu Yue Long Shan 古越龙山) appear at NGB duty-free at CNY 80-300 per bottle.

🍵 Longjing Green Tea

Longjing (龙井) — the West Lake Dragon Well green tea from Hangzhou (Zhejiang’s other major city) — is China’s most-famous tea, dating to the Tang dynasty. Pre-Qingming (early-April) harvest is the most prized. CNY 100-500+ per 250 g depending on grade.

🧣 Ningbo Silk

The Yangtze Delta has been a Chinese silk-producing region for over two millennia — Ningbo, Hangzhou and Suzhou silk products at the city silk shops. Scarves and small pieces from CNY 80-300; tailored items higher. The airport’s selection is curated and pricier than the downtown shops.

📜 Tianyige Reproductions

Reproduction Ming-dynasty woodblock prints and calligraphy from the Tianyi Pavilion museum shop — the connection to the world’s oldest surviving library is the distinctive Ningbo cultural souvenir. CNY 50-300.

The Tianyi Pavilion (Tianyige), built in 1561 during the Ming dynasty by Fan Qin, is the oldest surviving private library in China and one of the three oldest in the world. Set on the banks of Moon Lake (Yuehu) in central Ningbo, surrounded by a pond, bamboo groves and classical-Chinese rockeries — the building itself is the historic architectural attraction. The associated museum holds 300,000+ ancient texts including rare Ming-dynasty examination papers, woodblock-printing examples, and calligraphy. Entry CNY 30; 1.5-2 hours covers the visit.

The Ningbo Old Bund, on the Yuyao river in the Jiangbei district, is the country’s oldest open-port concession waterfront — established 1844, predating Shanghai’s better-known Bund by several years. The surviving 19th-century British, Dutch, French and Portuguese consulates and merchant houses now host pubs, restaurants, bars and boutique shops. Best in the evening, when the historic façades are illuminated and the riverside café culture takes hold. Free to walk.

The Hangzhou Bay Bridge — opened 2008, total length 36 km — is one of the world’s longest sea-crossing bridges and connects Ningbo’s north shore to Jiaxing (and onward to Shanghai). The mid-bridge Haitian Yizhou viewing platform offers panoramic views over the Hangzhou Bay tidal flats. Not feasible as a NGB layover destination (the bridge is 60 km north of the airport), but worth flagging for travellers crossing between Ningbo and Shanghai by car.

Tianyi Square, central Ningbo’s largest open commercial plaza, is the city’s principal shopping and meeting district — directly served by Metro Line 1 and the airport shuttle. The plaza fronts the Yongjiang river; the modern shopping malls, hotels (Shangri-La Ningbo, Sofitel Ningbo) and restaurants concentrate here. Useful as a layover anchor — the airport shuttle drops here, Wuhou-Shrine-equivalent attractions are reachable, and the dining options are concentrated.

Shangri-La Ningbo, Sofitel Ningbo Shangri-La, Holiday Inn Ningbo Daxie Suites, Howard Johnson Plaza Ningbo, Hyatt Regency Beilun Ningbo — full international-chain coverage in the central districts and the Beilun port area. CNY 500-1,200 per night. For a layover with hotel access, the Tianyi Square cluster is the most convenient for sightseeing. Airport-area business hotels exist at CNY 200-400 — usable for very early flights but not for sightseeing layovers.

China Mobile, China Unicom, China Telecom all sell SIMs at NGB landside for CNY 100-300 with passport registration. 5G in Ningbo is widespread; 4G universal. The Great Firewall blocks Google, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter/X, WhatsApp, YouTube, Telegram, the major Western news sites and many VPN services. Install a working VPN before flying; install WeChat (微信) and Alipay (支付宝) before arrival.

4-hour layover: stay airside; round trip to downtown by shuttle is ~80 min before any city time.
6-8 hour layover: shuttle bus to Tianyi Square, taxi to Tianyi Pavilion (1.5h), Yong-style yellow-croaker lunch at a Tianyi-Square seafood restaurant, return shuttle. ~5h round trip with city time.
12+ hour layover: add the Old Bund for evening river-front walking + dinner. Or take the high-speed rail to Hangzhou’s West Lake for the day (return Ningbo by HSR; ~6h round trip with city time). Allow 90 min return-buffer for security.
