🏢 Terminals & the Domestic-Only Reality

Surat Thani has two terminal buildings. In 2026 that distinction matters less than the schedule, which is entirely domestic. The routes are Bangkok’s two airports — Don Mueang (DMK) and Suvarnabhumi (BKK) — plus Chiang Mai (CNX), operated by the low-cost trio: Thai AirAsia, Thai Vietjet, and Nok Air. The “International” in the airport’s name is a legacy label, not a description of current operations.

The practical consequence is the one most island-bound travellers get wrong: you cannot fly into Surat Thani from abroad. You land in Thailand at Bangkok or Phuket, clear immigration there, then take a domestic hop to URT, then transfer overland and by sea to the islands. If that is your routing, your bag is typically checked only to URT on a separate domestic ticket — plan to collect it here and carry it onto the transfer bus.

URT is a small operation: a couple of hundred departures a week. The building empties out between waves, which means a compact landside concourse, a handful of food counters, and the Phantip and rival transfer desks. It moves quickly. It is not a place you would choose to spend time.

You do not clear immigration at Surat Thani. That happens at your international gateway. But the rules still govern your trip from the moment you book, and one of them changed materially in 2026.

### 30-Day Exemption: What Changed on 19 May 2026

Thailand’s Cabinet approved reverting the tourist visa-exemption stay from 60 days back to 30 days on 19 May 2026, effective 15 days after publication in the Royal Gazette. The 60-day window introduced in 2024 is ending.

Under the reverted scheme, passport holders from approximately 54 qualifying nationalities — including the US, UK, EU member states, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand — receive 30 days visa-free for tourism, extendable once at an immigration office for a further 30 days. Two additional caps came in with the change: visa-free entry is capped at twice per calendar year, and the stated purpose must be tourism. The country list was also trimmed, so confirm your passport’s current status against an official Thai source rather than assuming the old 60-day figure.

### Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC)

Thailand now requires the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) from foreign arrivals, replacing the old paper TM6 slip. It is mandatory and free — completed online at the official immigration portal (tdac.immigration.go.th) within 72 hours before arrival. You receive a QR code to show at the immigration counter. The TDAC is processed at your international point of entry into Thailand, not before your domestic connection to Surat Thani — so complete it before your international flight, not at the gate in Bangkok. Third-party sites charge for the same free form; use the government site.

### Visa on Arrival and Standard Visas

Nationalities outside the exemption list have two paths: a visa on arrival (for a defined set of countries, short stay, with a proof-of-funds requirement quoted at around ฿10,000 in cash), or a standard tourist visa arranged in advance via a Thai embassy or the e-visa system. Which applies depends entirely on your passport. None of it is processed at Surat Thani.

🚌 Getting to the Islands and Town

The airport sits in Phunphin district, roughly 25 km west of Surat Thani town, with no rail link and no city metro. Your options are a transfer-company minivan or coach, or a private car. The dominant operator is Phantip Travel, which has run island transfers since 1970 and keeps a desk in the arrivals area.

### Phantip to Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao

This is the option most arrivals want. Phantip runs a combined through-ticket: a coach from the airport to Donsak pier on the coast, then a vehicle ferry — Seatran or Raja — to the islands. One ticket covers the lot.

Approximate combined fares from airport pickup (verify against current schedule before travel):

• Koh Samui — from about ฿350 (≈ US$11)
• Koh Phangan — from about ฿450 (≈ US$14), normally ฿100 more than Samui
• Koh Tao — through-ticket available; longer and pricier, as it is the furthest island

Picking up at the airport adds roughly ฿150–180 over the same ticket bought in town.

The honest part is the time. The full journey runs 4.5 to 7 hours depending on connections and which island, because you are waiting for a scheduled ferry departure. Miss the last viable connection and you are overnighting on the mainland. If your flight lands late, check the last ferry before committing.

### To Surat Thani Town and Inland

For Surat Thani town, Phunphin railway station, or Khao Sok National Park, Phantip and similar operators run minivans and coaches. The town run takes about 45 minutes and starts from roughly ฿100–200; the air-conditioned minivans seat 12–15 and depart through the day rather than on a fixed schedule. Inland minivans to Khao Sok start from about ฿200. Confirm fares at the desk on the day.

### Private Taxi

A private car is faster and more expensive — useful for groups, late arrivals, or heavy bags. Book through the official transfer desk in arrivals, not with anyone approaching you inside the terminal.

🛋️ Lounges

There is no confirmed operating lounge at Surat Thani for 2026. The airport historically had a Thai Airways Royal Orchid Lounge in the domestic terminal, but Thai Airways no longer serves URT and the lounge is reported to have closed when the airline pulled out. Some lounge-finder databases still list it as Priority Pass–accepted; that listing is not an open door, and on-the-ground reports point to closure.

Plan as if there is no lounge. If you hold Priority Pass, DragonPass, or a lounge-bearing card, do not count on using it here. For a domestic hop this is rarely a hardship — you wait landside or at the gate with the food counters, which is roughly what the lounge offered anyway.

🍜 Food Before You Fly

The food at Surat Thani Airport is everyday Thai airport fare: rice and noodle plates, fried chicken, coffee, convenience-store standards, landside and around the gates. It is fine, quick, and cheaper than anything you will eat once you reach Koh Samui, where island prices apply. If you have time before a domestic flight, eat here.

Because there are no international departures, there is no international duty-free — no liquor-and-perfume counter, because you are not crossing a customs border on the way out. The small retail selection runs to snacks and local products. Surat Thani province is known for rambutan and salted eggs; both are sold cheaper in the town markets and on the islands than at the airport gate.

💡 Layover Reality

For most people URT is a transit point on a longer relay to the islands, so the question is less “what can I see on a layover” and more “will I make the ferry.” But if you have hours between a domestic arrival and an onward connection, here is the geography.

Surat Thani town is about 25 km east, roughly 45 minutes each way by minivan. A round trip plus anything worth doing eats at least three hours. The town is a working provincial centre — a riverfront, markets, a night market if your timing is right — not a sightseeing stop. Under four hours between flights, there is no margin; stay at the airport.

The islands are not layover material. Koh Samui and Koh Phangan are 4.5 to 7 hours away one-way by bus and ferry, tied to ferry schedules. Attempting to reach any island on a same-day connection is not a miscalculation; it is simply not a journey that fits the time.

Khao Sok National Park — limestone karst, lake, jungle — is about two hours inland by minivan. Phantip and others run the route from the airport. It is the one genuinely worthwhile outing in the area, but treat it as an overnight or a full day. On a short connection, stay put.

🔧 Practical Notes

Payment. The transfer desks, minivans, and island ferries still run on cash in baht. Thailand’s PromptPay and card acceptance are widespread in cities but patchy at a provincial airport and on the ferries. Carry enough baht to cover the transfer and a meal. ATMs are on site; foreign cards work but attract a per-withdrawal fee on top of your bank’s.

Connectivity. Thai prepaid eSIMs and SIMs are cheap and cover southern Thailand well. Sort one out before you land if you want data for the onward booking. Airport Wi-Fi exists but is the usual time-limited variety.

Currency. The baht traded at roughly ฿32.6 to the US dollar and ฿37.9 to the euro in late May 2026. The baht weakened a few percent against both currencies through the first half of 2026, so check a live rate rather than relying on an old figure. Airport exchange counters give a worse rate than a town bank or city ATM; change only what you need for the transfer here and top up later.
