KLM Baggage Allowance 2026: Cabin, Checked Bags & Fees

✓ Policy web-verified 2026-05-31

KLM ties your baggage to the fare you book, not the cabin. Economy comes in four tiers — Basic, Light, Standard and Flex — and the cheapest two (Basic and Light) include no checked bag at all. Cabin baggage, however, is generous compared with low-cost carriers: every Economy fare except Basic lets you bring a full-size carry-on plus a small under-seat bag.

This guide covers KLM’s current 2026 published policy: exact cabin and checked dimensions, the per-fare breakdown, and what extra bags actually cost. Figures are weight-based (KLM uses a kg allowance, not a piece-count “free bag” on most routes), and fees vary by route and how early you pay.

Cabin bag & personal item

Item Allowance
Personal / under-seat item 40 x 30 x 15 cm. One small bag that fits under the seat in front of you. This is the ONLY cabin item allowed on an Economy Basic ticket. On Light/Standard/Flex it is carried in addition to the full-size 55 x 35 x 25 cm carry-on, with a 12 kg combined weight limit.
Cabin / carry-on bag 55 x 35 x 25 cm · 12 kg combined with small bag (18 kg in Business) Free on all Economy fares except Basic (Basic = small under-seat bag only)

Checked baggage & fees

Checked allowance Not included on Basic or Light; 1 bag on Standard & Flex Economy; 2 bags in Premium Comfort and Business (Standard/Flex)

Typical fee Pre-purchased online: roughly EUR 20–70 within Europe and EUR 30–240 intercontinental per bag, depending on route and how early you buy. Cheaper online (24h+ before departure) than at the airport.

What you actually get on a cheap fare

What you actually get on a KLM deal fare: almost every cheap KLM ticket you’ll find is an Economy Light fare. The good news — you keep the full cabin allowance: a 55 x 35 x 25 cm carry-on plus a 40 x 30 x 15 cm under-seat bag, up to 12 kg combined. That’s more than most low-cost carriers give away for free.

The catch — Light includes no checked bag. If you need the hold, you either pre-buy a bag (cheapest online, 24h+ before departure) or step up to Economy Standard, which bundles one 23 kg checked bag. On longer routes the price gap between Light + paid bag and a Standard fare is often small, so always compare both before booking. Watch out for the even cheaper Economy Basic fare on some routes: it strips you down to the small under-seat bag only — no full-size carry-on.

Oversize, sports & special items

Oversize & overweight: Bags 23–32 kg or larger than 158 cm fly as excess baggage for roughly EUR 75–100 within Europe and EUR 100–300 intercontinental. Anything over 32 kg is not accepted as a single piece and must be repacked.

Sports equipment: Golf clubs, skis/snowboards and fishing gear can replace one checked bag with no reservation, each up to 300 cm (L+W+H) and 23 kg (32 kg in Business). Bicycles must be reserved at least 48 hours ahead, boxed, for roughly EUR 55–100 each way.

Musical instruments: Small instruments within 55 x 35 x 25 cm and the cabin weight limit travel as hand baggage. Larger ones (e.g. guitars) go in the hold or on a purchased extra seat (up to 45 kg). Instruments over 32 kg or larger than 300 cm need a reservation at least 48 hours before departure.

Flying Blue status: Silver/Gold members get one extra free checked bag; Platinum/Ultimate get two. As of February 2026, status baggage benefits also apply on Economy Basic and Light fares.

Frequently asked questions

Does KLM include a checked bag in the cheapest fare?

No. KLM's two cheapest Economy fares — Basic and Light — include no checked baggage. You must buy a hold bag separately or book an Economy Standard or Flex fare, which each include one 23 kg checked bag.

What is KLM's cabin baggage size and weight in 2026?

On Economy Light, Standard and Flex you may bring one carry-on up to 55 x 35 x 25 cm plus one small under-seat bag up to 40 x 30 x 15 cm, with a combined weight of 12 kg. Business class allows up to 18 kg combined.

What can I bring on an Economy Basic ticket?

Economy Basic is the most restrictive fare: only one small bag up to 40 x 30 x 15 cm that fits under the seat in front of you. There is no full-size carry-on and no checked bag.

How much does an extra checked bag cost on KLM?

Pre-purchased online (24 hours or more before departure), an extra checked bag is roughly EUR 20–70 within Europe and EUR 30–240 on intercontinental routes, depending on the route and how early you buy. Paying at the airport costs more.

What is KLM's checked baggage weight and size limit?

Each checked bag may weigh up to 23 kg (32 kg in Business) and measure up to 158 cm in total (length + width + height). Bags between 23 and 32 kg incur an excess fee; bags over 32 kg are not accepted and must be repacked.

Can I take a checked bag on KLM Premium Comfort with a Light fare?

No. A Light fare in Premium Comfort still excludes checked baggage. You get the cabin allowance (two carry-ons plus a small bag), but you must add a hold bag separately or book a Standard/Flex Premium Comfort fare, which includes two 23 kg checked bags.

Is it cheaper to add a bag to a Light fare or book Economy Standard?

It depends on the route. On many longer routes the price gap between an Economy Light fare plus a paid bag and an Economy Standard fare is small, so compare both at booking. Standard also adds seat selection and refundable miles on most routes.

Can I carry sports equipment or a musical instrument on KLM?

Golf clubs, skis/snowboards and fishing gear can replace a checked bag at no extra charge (up to 300 cm and 23 kg). Bikes need a 48-hour reservation and cost roughly EUR 55–100 each way. Small instruments fit as hand baggage; larger ones go in the hold or on a purchased extra seat.
