Finnair Baggage Allowance 2026

✓ Policy web-verified 2026-05-31

Finnair structures its entire baggage allowance around four fare types — Superlight, Light, Classic and Flex — so the bag you get depends on the fare you book, not the airline. The most important thing to know in 2026: on European routes the cheapest fare is Superlight, which gives you a personal item only — no rollaboard carry-on and no checked bag. On long-haul routes the cheapest fare is Light, which does include a full cabin bag plus personal item but still no checked luggage.

Finnair also updated its extra-baggage fees on 18 May 2026, and fees rise in stages as departure approaches — booking a bag online more than six days out is materially cheaper than paying at the airport. The figures below reflect Finnair’s current published policy.

What you actually get on a cheap fare

What you actually get at deal prices: Finnair’s cheapest fares are bag-stingy, and the catch is different by route. On European routes the cheapest fare is Superlight — that’s a personal item only (40 x 30 x 15 cm, under-seat). No rollaboard, no checked bag. If you’re rolling a cabin-sized case to the gate on a Superlight ticket, you’ll be charged to bring it on board, so add the 55 x 40 x 23 cm cabin bag at booking or size down to a backpack.

On long-haul routes the cheapest fare is Light, which is more generous: you do get the full 55 x 40 x 23 cm cabin bag plus a personal item (8 kg combined) — but still zero checked baggage. So a cheap Helsinki–Asia or Helsinki–US Finnair fare almost always means hold luggage costs extra.

The money move: compare the Light fare + paid bag against the Classic fare. Classic bundles a checked bag, seat selection and date-change flexibility, and the price gap is often tiny — sometimes cheaper than buying the bag à la carte on Light. Always add bags online and more than six days out; airport prices run roughly double, and Finnair raised fees on 18 May 2026.

Oversize, sports & special items

Special and oversize baggage. Sports gear (skis, golf clubs) and bicycles are always treated as special baggage, never part of your standard allowance, and are priced the same as a normal extra checked bag — book them in advance via Manage Booking. A bicycle must be in a proper protective case with handlebars turned, pedals off and tyres deflated. A musical instrument can travel in the hold within the standard 23 kg / 90 x 75 x 45 cm limits; larger instruments up to 32 kg and/or 190 x 75 x 65 cm are accepted for a heavy-bag charge, or you can buy an extra seat for a fragile instrument in the cabin.

Overweight and oversize. A bag over the weight limit (or over 90 x 75 x 45 cm) attracts a heavy/oversize fee — roughly €60 within Europe and around €110 on Asia, North America and Middle East routes. Maximum acceptable weight for a single piece is 32 kg.

Finnair Plus perks. Gold, Platinum and Platinum Lumo members get one free extra 23 kg checked bag on Finnair flights; Silver gets 50% off an extra bag. Elite members also get a complimentary cabin bag even on Superlight fares.

Frequently asked questions

Does Finnair's cheapest fare include a checked bag?

No. Neither the Europe Superlight fare nor the long-haul Light fare includes any checked baggage — you must buy it separately or book a Classic or Flex fare, which include a checked bag.

What is the difference between Superlight and Light on Finnair?

Superlight is the cheapest Europe fare and includes only a personal item (40 x 30 x 15 cm) — no rollaboard carry-on. Light is the cheapest long-haul fare and includes a full cabin bag (55 x 40 x 23 cm) plus a personal item. Neither includes a checked bag.

How big and heavy can my Finnair carry-on be?

The cabin bag limit is 55 x 40 x 23 cm. The combined weight of your cabin bag and personal item must not exceed 8 kg in Economy and Premium Economy, or 12 kg in Business. The personal item must fit 40 x 30 x 15 cm.

How much does a checked bag cost on Finnair in 2026?

On European routes a checked bag starts at roughly €29 when booked online more than six days out, rising to about €36 within six days and around €60 at the airport. On long-haul routes (e.g. North America) it starts at about €65–70 prepaid and around €90 / $100 at the airport. Finnair updated these fees on 18 May 2026 and prices rise in stages as departure nears.

What is Finnair's checked baggage weight and size limit?

Each checked bag may weigh up to 23 kg in Economy and Premium Economy, or 32 kg in Business, with maximum dimensions of 90 x 75 x 45 cm. Heavier or larger items incur a heavy/oversize fee, with 32 kg the absolute single-piece maximum.

How does Finnair handle sports equipment and musical instruments?

Skis, golf clubs and bicycles are always special baggage, separate from your normal allowance and priced like an extra checked bag — book them in advance. Instruments within 23 kg / 90 x 75 x 45 cm travel as normal checked baggage; larger ones up to 32 kg / 190 x 75 x 65 cm are accepted for a heavy-bag charge, or you can buy a cabin seat for a fragile instrument.

Did Finnair change its baggage fees in 2026?

Yes. Finnair updated its extra-baggage fees on 18 May 2026. Pricing remains route-dependent and time-tiered — the lowest rate is online more than six days before departure, with increases at 6–2 days, 48–6 hours and under 6 hours, and the highest prices at the airport.

Do Finnair Plus members get extra baggage?

Yes. Gold, Platinum and Platinum Lumo members receive one free extra 23 kg checked bag on Finnair flights, and Silver members get 50% off an extra bag. Elite members also get a complimentary cabin bag even on Superlight fares.
