SAS Baggage Allowance 2026: Cabin, Checked & Fees

✓ Policy web-verified 2026-05-31

SAS (Scandinavian Airlines) ties your baggage allowance to your fare bundle, not just your cabin class. The cheapest SAS Go Light fare is hand-baggage-only: on European routes it strips out even the full-size cabin bag, leaving you with just a small personal item unless you pay to add more. Step up to Go Smart or Go Pro and a 23 kg checked bag is included. This guide covers the current 2026 dimensions, weight limits and fees, and flags where figures change by route and fare.

One big structural change to know: SAS left Star Alliance and joined SkyTeam on 1 September 2024, and as of 23 April 2025 frequent-flyer status now grants extra checked bags even on Light fares. If you hold status, your allowance is better than the fare alone suggests.

What you actually get on a cheap fare

What you actually get at deal prices: the cheap SAS fares advertised on deal sites are almost always SAS Go Light. That fare includes the 8 kg cabin allowance concept in name only on European routes — in practice Go Light gives you just the small 40 x 30 x 15 cm personal item and no checked bag.

To bring a real suitcase you add a checked bag at checkout, typically EUR 20–60 each way on shorter routes (more on long-haul). Adding the full-size cabin bag on Go Light is a separate ~EUR 12–20 charge. Always price the bag before booking — a EUR 40 round-trip bag can erase the gap between Go Light and Go Smart, which already includes 23 kg. If you hold EuroBonus/SkyTeam status, don’t pay: Silver/Elite get +1 free 23 kg bag and Gold/Diamond +2, even on Light.

Oversize, sports & special items

Overweight and oversize: bags over 23 kg up to 28 kg cost roughly EUR 55–75; from 28 to the 32 kg hard maximum, roughly EUR 85–135. Overweight charges are paid at the airport — there is no online prepay for excess weight. Anything over 158 cm (L+W+H) or heavier than 32 kg is handled as special/oversize baggage. Maximum of nine bags per passenger.

Sports equipment and instruments: sports gear up to 23 kg (equipment plus its transport bag) counts as one of your included checked pieces at no extra charge if within size limits. Skis/snowboard plus a boot bag count as a single piece. Bikes, golf bags, surfboards and similar must be registered in advance via SAS Customer Service or the online form. Small instruments can travel as cabin baggage if within cabin dimensions; large instruments need an extra seat or special-baggage handling in a hard case.

2026 note: figures vary by route (intra-Europe vs intercontinental) and by when you buy. The prices above are guideline ranges; SAS uses dynamic, route-specific pricing, so confirm the exact fee for your itinerary at checkout.
