China Eastern Baggage Allowance 2026: Carry-On, Checked & Fees

✓ Policy web-verified 2026-07-21

China Eastern Airlines (MU) runs two completely different baggage systems, and which one applies to you depends on where you fly. Domestic flights inside mainland China use a weight-based system (a total kg allowance regardless of how many bags). International and regional flights use a piece-based system (a fixed number of bags, each capped by weight). Confusing the two is the single most common reason travellers get charged at the gate.

On top of that, the international free checked allowance varies by destination region and by fare bundle. A Basic Economy ticket to Europe includes zero free checked bags, while the same fare class to the Americas includes one. This guide covers the current 2026 published limits straight from China Eastern, plus what their cheapest deal fares actually include.

What you actually get on a cheap fare

What China Eastern’s cheapest deal fare actually includes: on the long-haul international routes where China Eastern shows up in our flight deals (typically Europe and Asia-Pacific to/from China), the cheapest bookable fare we see includes an 8 kg cabin bag and one 23 kg checked bag — it is not stripped down to hand-luggage-only the way some European full-service carriers do at deal prices.

The catch is the fare-bundle and region split. A genuine Basic Economy ticket to a European destination carries zero free checked bags, whereas standard Economy (Y/B) on the same route includes one. To the Americas, even Basic Economy includes one 23 kg piece.

Oversize, sports & special items

Domestic vs international — don’t mix them up. Mainland China domestic flights use a weight allowance: 20 kg total in Economy, 30 kg in Business, 40 kg in First, with no single piece over 50 kg. International flights ignore total weight and count pieces instead, each piece capped at 23 kg (Economy) or 32 kg (Business/First).

Oversize and overweight. A piece whose three sides sum to between 62 in and 80 in (roughly 158-203 cm) is charged around USD 165 / CNY 1,000 per piece. Anything over 80 in (203 cm) needs airline approval and costs around USD 445 / CNY 2,700 per piece. These are reference figures.

Sports equipment and instruments. Items like skis, golf clubs and bicycles are accepted as checked baggage and count against your free allowance if within size/weight limits; oversize sports gear is charged at the oversize rates above and bicycles must be boxed or bagged. A musical instrument too large to fit the cabin allowance can be checked, or you can buy an extra seat (“cabin-seat baggage”) to carry it in the cabin — arrange this in advance.

Lithium batteries and power banks. Power banks and spare lithium batteries must go in carry-on, never checked, per Chinese civil aviation rules.

Australia ↔ China — you get 2 bags, not 1. China Eastern’s official baggage page lists only 1 checked piece to/from Australia and New Zealand — but the real allowance on a Standard Economy ticket to mainland China is 2 × 23 kg. This is the long-standing Oceania–China rule that the major Chinese carriers run for the student, family and daigou market, and it is what your ticket actually carries. The one exception is the cheaper “Economy Light” / “Saver” fare, which gives 1 × 23 kg; a standard economy fare gives you two.

Europe ↔ Japan: 2 checked bags included. On Economy fares between Europe and Japan (via Shanghai), China Eastern includes 2 × 23 kg — both pieces, even on discounted Economy — not the single bag you get on most other long-haul markets. China Eastern is the most consistent of the Chinese carriers here — a China Eastern fare to Japan almost always shows “2PC” (two pieces) in the fare’s baggage breakdown. This is a Japan-specific exception: China Eastern fares from Europe to China or Southeast Asia follow the ordinary allowance shown below. On the booking page, look for the code 2PC (two pieces) to confirm before you pay.

Baggage by region & route

China Eastern’s allowance is strongly fare-class dependent. The cheapest Basic Economy fare can include no free checked bag to Europe; Standard Economy gets two pieces.

Region / route Cheapest economy checked allowance System
Europe Standard Economy 2 × 23 kg; Basic Economy 0 (buy ahead) Piece
Americas (USA / Canada) 2 × 23 kg (Basic Economy 1 × 23 kg) Piece
Australia / New Zealand 1 × 23 kg (Economy Light/Saving; Standard Economy 2 × 23 kg) Piece
Mainland China / Asia up to 2 × 23 kg Piece

✈️ SkyTeam: Elite Plus members (incl. Delta SkyMiles & Air France–KLM Flying Blue elites) get +1 extra checked bag free — a 1-piece Economy Light/Saving ticket becomes 2 pieces at check-in.

Always check the BAGGAGE line on your e-ticket — Basic Economy fares may carry no free checked bag. Allowances are for the cheapest bookable economy fare, web-verified June 2026; always confirm on your e-ticket as fares and routes change.

Frequently asked questions

How many bags can I check for free on China Eastern in Economy?

It depends on the route. On international flights, Economy (Y/B fares) includes 1 x 23 kg piece to Europe and 2 x 23 kg pieces to the Americas, Asia-Pacific, Africa and the Middle East. Basic Economy includes zero free checked bags to Europe and one to the Americas. Domestic flights instead give you a 20 kg total weight allowance regardless of piece count.

What is China Eastern's carry-on size and weight limit?

The cabin bag limit is 55 x 40 x 20 cm (22 x 16 x 8 in). Economy passengers get 1 piece up to 8 kg, Business gets 2 pieces at 8 kg each, and First gets 2 pieces at 10 kg each. You may also bring one free under-seat personal item of about 35 x 32 x 18 cm.

Does China Eastern's cheapest fare include a checked bag?

On the long-haul routes where China Eastern appears in flight deals, the cheapest bookable fare typically includes an 8 kg cabin bag plus one 23 kg checked bag. However, a true Basic Economy fare to Europe includes no free checked bag — so always confirm the fare bundle and destination region before booking.

What is the checked bag weight limit per piece?

On international flights each Economy piece must be 23 kg or under, and each Business/First piece 32 kg or under, with the three sides of any piece summing to no more than 158 cm. On domestic flights it is a total-weight system (20/30/40 kg by class) with no single piece over 50 kg.

How much does an overweight or oversize bag cost on China Eastern?

A piece with three sides totalling 62-80 in is charged around USD 165 (CNY 1,000) per piece. Over 80 in requires airline approval and costs around USD 445 (CNY 2,700) per piece.

Can I bring a power bank or sports equipment on China Eastern?

Power banks and spare lithium batteries must be carried in your cabin baggage and are not allowed in checked bags, per Chinese aviation rules. Sports equipment such as skis, golf clubs and boxed bicycles is accepted as checked baggage; if it exceeds the standard size it is charged at the oversize rates.
