Air Do Baggage Allowance 2026: Carry-On, Checked Bags & Fees

✓ Policy web-verified 2026-05-31

Air Do (AIRDO) is a Hokkaido-based Japanese domestic carrier flying routes between Tokyo (Haneda) and Hokkaido cities such as Sapporo (New Chitose), Hakodate, Asahikawa, Memanbetsu and Obihiro. It has no international network, so its baggage rules are governed entirely by Japan’s domestic-passenger Conditions of Carriage rather than international piece/weight systems. The headline numbers are simple and generous by global standards: 10 kg of carry-on plus a personal item, and a free checked allowance of 20 kg included in every fare.

Air Do is mid-revision in 2026. The current checked-baggage rules apply through 18 May 2026; a new Conditions of Carriage takes effect 19 May 2026, switching the per-piece checked weight to 23 kg, tightening the free size limit, and capping free pieces at two. Revised fees for travel on or after that date are being published separately by Air Do.

What you actually get on a cheap fare

What you actually get on Air Do’s cheapest fare: unlike most low-cost carriers, Air Do bakes a full baggage allowance into even its lowest advance-purchase fares. At deal prices you still get a 7-10 kg cabin bag plus a personal item, and roughly 20 kg of checked baggage included — no bag-free fare trap to watch for. For a Tokyo-Hokkaido trip that means a deal price is the all-in price; you won’t be upsold a checked bag at the gate the way you would on a typical budget airline.

Oversize, sports & special items

Oversize and overweight: Under current rules each checked item can weigh up to 32 kg and the sum of its three sides must be 203 cm or less, with a 100 kg total cap per passenger. From 19 May 2026 the free size limit drops to 158 cm, items up to 45 kg are accepted, and oversized pieces up to 292 cm are carried for an added fee.

Restricted in the cabin: bladed items (scissors, knives), large tripods and golf clubs are not allowed in the cabin and must be checked. Baggage must fit under the seat or in the overhead bin and cannot block aisles or exit rows.

2026 reminder: because Air Do is changing its Conditions of Carriage on 19 May 2026 and re-issuing fees separately, always reconfirm the exact yen amount for excess, overweight or oversize bags when you book travel for the second half of 2026.

Frequently asked questions

How much baggage is included free on Air Do?

Every Air Do fare includes one 10 kg carry-on bag plus a personal item in the cabin, and a free checked allowance of 20 kg. From 19 May 2026 the checked rule moves to a 23 kg per-piece weight with up to two free pieces.

What are Air Do's carry-on size and weight limits?

One cabin bag whose three dimensions total no more than 115 cm (within 55 x 40 x 25 cm) and weighs up to 10 kg, including your personal item. There is no separate aircraft-by-seat-count rule on Air Do.

Can I bring a personal item as well as a carry-on?

Yes. In addition to the carry-on bag you may bring one small personal item such as a handbag, camera or umbrella to stow under the seat. Its weight is counted within the combined 10 kg cabin limit.

How much does an overweight bag cost on Air Do?

Under current rules, overweight checked baggage costs ¥2,500 for 1-10 kg over, ¥3,500 for 11-20 kg over, ¥4,500 for 21-30 kg over, then about ¥1,000 per additional 10 kg. Revised fees apply to travel from 19 May 2026 and are published separately.

What is changing for Air Do baggage in 2026?

A new Conditions of Carriage takes effect 19 May 2026. The free checked size limit tightens from 203 cm to 158 cm (sum of three sides), oversized items up to 292 cm are accepted for a fee, the per-piece weight standard becomes 23 kg, the max per item rises to 45 kg, and the free piece count is capped at two. Fees for flights on or after that date are announced separately.

Can I carry a musical instrument or sports equipment on Air Do?

Instruments within carry-on size (115 cm total, 55 x 40 x 25 cm, up to 10 kg) can be brought into the cabin. Larger instruments require buying an extra seat at a special fare of about ¥11,300 (tax included) per one-way route. Golf clubs, large tripods and bladed items must be checked at the counter; sports gear travels as checked baggage within the size and weight limits.

Does the cheapest Air Do fare include a checked bag?

Yes. Air Do does not sell a stripped 'basic' fare. Even at deal prices the cheapest fare includes the cabin bag (10 kg) and the 20 kg free checked allowance (23 kg per piece from 19 May 2026), so you rarely need to add baggage at checkout.
