AirBaltic Baggage Allowance 2026: Cabin, Checked & Fees

✓ Policy web-verified 2026-08-04

airBaltic sells baggage by fare bundle. Its ticket types are Economy MINI · BASIC · CLASSIC · FLEX plus Business. The cheapest, Economy MINI, was added below BASIC on 6 May 2026 and includes only a small under-seat item — no full cabin bag and no checked bag. Economy BASIC and everything above it do include a full cabin bag. You add anything else for a fee, and buying online before you fly is always far cheaper than paying at the airport.

The key numbers for 2026: a personal item up to 40 × 30 × 15 cm, a full cabin bag up to 55 × 40 × 23 cm, and a combined cabin weight cap of 8 kg. Each checked bag is up to 23 kg and a generous 100 × 50 × 80 cm — larger than most airlines allow before oversize fees kick in.

How the free item compares with Ryanair: airBaltic’s 40 × 30 × 15 cm personal item is smaller than the free bag Ryanair has given every passenger since September 2025, which is 40 × 30 × 20 cm. Same footprint, 5 cm shallower — about 18 litres against 24, roughly a quarter less. 40 × 30 × 15 cm is the minimum personal-item size EU member states agreed in June 2025 and that Airlines for Europe members adopted from July 2025 — an industry commitment, not a law in force. airBaltic’s Economy MINI gives exactly that floor; Ryanair sits a third above it. If you pack to a Ryanair-sized under-seat bag, it may not pass on airBaltic.

What you actually get on a cheap fare

What you actually get on the cheapest airBaltic fare: the cheapest fare on airBaltic’s own site is Economy MINI, which includes only a personal item — 40 × 30 × 15 cm that fits under the seat. No full-size cabin bag and no checked bag. One caveat that decides what you can pack: MINI is sold only through airBaltic’s own website, app and call centre, so a fare booked through an agent or a comparison site normally starts at Economy BASIC — which does include the cabin bag. Check the fare name on your booking before you pack to it.

If you need a proper cabin bag, you must move up to Economy BASIC or add the cabin allowance for a fee. For a checked bag, the cheapest path is to prepay online from EUR 19.99 rather than buying a higher fare bundle or paying at the airport. Always price the bundle (Economy CLASSIC) against the bare fare plus a prepaid bag — on short Baltic hops the standalone bag is usually cheaper, on multi-bag trips the bundle wins.

Oversize, sports & special items

Oversize and overweight (airport rates): a checked bag bigger than 100 × 50 × 80 cm but still ≤ 23 kg costs EUR 75 at the airport. A bag over 23 kg (up to the 32 kg hard limit) is EUR 135 (EUR 75 oversize/airport + EUR 60 overweight), per bag, per direction. Always buy weight and bags online to avoid these.

Sports and special equipment: items like skis, golf clubs, bicycles and instruments are carried as checked baggage and count toward your allowance (or are bought separately). They must stay within the 23 kg / 32 kg weight limits; larger or heavier items follow airBaltic’s special/bulky baggage rules and should be declared and paid for in advance. Musical instruments too large to fit standard cabin dimensions may need an extra seat.

Note on fare names: airBaltic’s current ticket types are Economy MINI, BASIC, CLASSIC and FLEX plus Business. Economy MINI is the newest and lowest, added on 6 May 2026 below BASIC; the five older types all include a cabin suitcase, so MINI is a genuinely new bottom rung rather than a rename. Older guides — including earlier versions of this one — describe a “Green” bundle; that name does not appear on airBaltic’s current ticket-type, fare-conditions or baggage pages, so treat Green / Green Plus wording you meet elsewhere as out of date. Fees and exact bundle pricing vary by route and demand.

Frequently asked questions

Does the cheapest airBaltic fare include a carry-on bag?

No. The cheapest fare, Economy MINI, includes only a personal item (40 × 30 × 15 cm) that fits under the seat — smaller than Ryanair’s free 40 × 30 × 20 cm bag. A full-size cabin bag (55 × 40 × 23 cm) requires Economy BASIC or higher, or paying to add the cabin allowance.

What is airBaltic's cabin baggage size and weight limit?

The cabin bag limit is 55 × 40 × 23 cm and the personal item is 40 × 30 × 15 cm. Combined weight of both pieces must not exceed 8 kg. You can upgrade the cabin allowance from 8 kg to 12 kg for a fee starting around EUR 13.99.

How much does a checked bag cost on airBaltic?

Prepaid online, a checked bag starts from EUR 19.99 per bag per one-way journey. Buying at the airport costs much more, and the exact price varies by route and how far ahead you book.

How heavy can an airBaltic checked bag be?

Each standard checked bag can weigh up to 23 kg and measure up to 100 × 50 × 80 cm. On Economy FLEX and Business fares you get two bags totalling 46 kg, with a maximum of 32 kg per bag.

What are airBaltic's oversize and overweight fees?

At the airport, a bag bigger than 100 × 50 × 80 cm but up to 23 kg costs EUR 75. A bag over 23 kg (up to 32 kg) costs EUR 135 (EUR 75 + EUR 60 overweight), per bag per direction. Pay online in advance to avoid these charges.

Which airBaltic fares include a checked bag?

A checked bag is included from Economy CLASSIC upward: CLASSIC gets one 23 kg bag, while Economy FLEX and Business include two bags totalling 46 kg. Economy MINI and Economy BASIC include no checked bag.

Can I bring sports equipment or a musical instrument on airBaltic?

Yes. Skis, golf clubs, bikes and instruments travel as checked baggage within the 23 kg / 32 kg weight limits, or are bought as extra/special baggage. Oversized or bulky items must be declared and paid for in advance; very large instruments may require an extra seat.
