Tulum's ruins are the only Mayan city built on a seaside cliff — El Castillo sits right at the edge above the Caribbean, with a small swimmable beach at its base. The other thing to do is the cenotes: freshwater sinkholes in the jungle, like Gran Cenote, where you snorkel past turtles in water clear enough to read through. Eat cochinita pibil, the Yucatán's slow-roasted achiote pork, and skip the $30 beach-club ceviche for a $4 taco joint in the town center. The catch is seaweed. Come November to March for dry days and clean water; sargassum piles up on the beaches May to October, peaking June through August. Those are also the cheapest-fare months — so a deal flight to Tulum often lands you in rain and rotting seaweed.
