Split is built *inside* a Roman ruin: Diocletian's Palace isn't a fenced-off monument but the living center of town, with the emperor's 4th-century walls now holding apartments, cafés, and a cathedral that was once his mausoleum. Walk into the Vestibule, a domed antechamber where a cappella klapa singers test the acoustics most days.
