🏢 The Terminal — What to Expect

NDR operates from a single terminal at Al Aroui, about 26 km south of the city. The airport is functional and not especially large; its character is shaped almost entirely by its traffic mix. Ryanair and Air Arabia Maroc run the bulk of European links. Royal Air Maroc handles the Casablanca domestic connections. In the summer months, when European schools break and the Riffian diaspora returns en masse, the terminal is at its most congested. Outside those peaks it is quiet. There is no rail link; the planning that matters is the transfer between the terminal and Nador.

🛂 Border & Visa

NDR processes arrivals through Moroccan passport control — not an EU border, not Schengen.

Visa-free (90 days): Citizens of the US, UK, EU and Schengen states, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and more than 60 other countries can enter on a valid passport with no advance form or fee. The 90-day allowance is per entry; there is no requirement to pre-register.

e-Visa: Nationalities not on the visa-free list can apply online via the official Moroccan e-Visa portal. The e-Visa is valid for 180 days from the date of issue and permits a 30-day stay; it is also available to holders of a valid US, EU, or UK residence permit. Check which category applies to your passport before travel.

Passport validity: Must cover the full duration of stay. There is no general requirement for six months’ validity beyond entry, but check the current rules for your nationality.

🚌 Getting Into the City

AIRBUS Line 23

The AIRBUS Line 23 was introduced in 2023 and is the cheapest route from the terminal to Nador city — it runs from outside arrivals roughly hourly between about 08:00 and 22:00. When your flight lands inside that window and the timing works, this is the uncomplicated option.

Grand and Petit Taxis

The taxis waiting at the terminal run approximately 150–225 MAD into Nador and take about 40 minutes over the 26 km. Agree the fare with the driver before you get in — the airport run is a predictable place for an inflated quote to anyone who hasn’t checked. There is no meter obligation for grand taxis on fixed routes; agreeing in advance is the standard approach, not an unusual negotiation.

Melilla

The Spanish enclave of Melilla sits just north of Nador, reachable via the Beni Ensar crossing. Treat that crossing as what it is: an international border between Morocco and EU/Schengen territory, not a local hop. If your itinerary involves Melilla, factor in the border formalities.

💵 The Dirham — A Closed Currency

The dirham is a closed currency, which has practical consequences that catch people out.

• You cannot buy or exchange dirham outside Morocco — banks and exchange bureaux abroad will refuse it.
• You may not export more than 2,000 MAD out of the country.
• Get your dirham on arrival (airport ATMs or exchange desks) and spend it down before departure. Keep your exchange receipts if you plan to convert any back before leaving.
• Cards work in Nador city and at the airport. In the markets and for taxis, cash is expected.
• Morocco is moving toward loosening the dirham’s crawling peg through 2026, so rates may shift — but the closed-currency export rule is not changing on that timeline.

🍽️ Food Before You Fly

The Rif coast is Mediterranean in character and seafood-forward in what it does best. The Mar Chica lagoon immediately behind the city produces its own supply — fresh fish and shellfish grilled simply, priced in dirham, not in tourist-menu euros. Alongside the seafood there is tagine, harira soup and the ever-present sweet mint tea.

For anything to carry home within your customs allowance, local honey and olives from the region travel well and are sold in the markets. Tipping at around 5–10% (a few dirham) is the norm.

Nador’s strongest feature is the Mar Chica: a large saltwater lagoon enclosed by a sandspit, with a corniche and regenerated waterfront, flamingos, birdlife and a marina development. The Mediterranean beaches of the Rif coast and the headland of Cap des Trois Fourches to the north-west are the natural draws beyond the city. Nador is a working port-and-trade city, not primarily a tourist destination; the appeal is the lagoon, the coast and the food.

Layover math: The airport is 26 km out, the AIRBUS Line 23 runs roughly hourly, and the taxi takes about 40 minutes each way. That adds up quickly.

• 4–5 hours: The Mar Chica corniche is reachable by taxi with a reasonable return-security buffer. The hourly bus makes timing unreliable — a taxi is the controllable option.
• Under 4 hours: Stay airside.
• Cap des Trois Fourches or the beaches: These require a half-day. A layover won’t do it.
