🌍 About Bari

In Bari's old town, women sit at their doorways along Arco Basso making orecchiette by hand — the little ear-shaped pasta drying on boards in the street, sold to whoever walks past. Order it con le cime di rapa, with bitter turnip greens, garlic and anchovy; for street food it's panzerotto, a fried dough pocket of tomato and mozzarella. The other thing to see is the Basilica di San Nicola, which holds the bones of Saint Nicholas — the original Santa Claus — smuggled here from Turkey in 1087. That makes Bari a pilgrimage site for Orthodox Christians as much as Catholics, a rare mix. Come April–May or September–October for warm days without the crush; July and August are muggy and packed, and winter is cheap but genuinely bleak.
