Belize City isn't where you linger — it's the hub you pass through to reach the cayes (Caye Caulker, Ambergris Caye) and the barrier reef, the second-largest on Earth. The one genuinely distinctive sight is the Swing Bridge over Haulover Creek: built in 1923, it's the only manually operated swing bridge left in Central America, once hand-cranked by four men so fishing sailboats could pass. Belize is the only country in Central America where English is the official language, which makes getting around easy. Eat rice and beans with stew chicken — the beans are cooked into the rice with coconut milk, not served alongside. Come February to April for dry, warm weather; June to November is the wet hurricane season, so cheaper fares then carry real weather risk.
