🌍 About Tirana
Tirana is cheap, chaotic, and more interesting than its reputation. The thing to know is Blloku: a few blocks that were sealed off for communist party elite until 1991 — ordinary Albanians couldn't enter — and are now the city's densest run of bars and cafés, with dictator Enver Hoxha's villa still standing among them. Order fërgesë, a Tirana dish of peppers, tomato and curd baked into a thick skillet hash; it's the local specialty, not a tourist invention. For the communist backstory proper, Bunk'Art 1 fills a real nuclear bunker on the edge of town. Buildings around the center are painted in clashing colors, a deliberate 2000s mayoral project to lift the post-communist gloom. Come April–June or September–October: warm but walkable.
