Cagliari is Sardinia's capital, and its standout quarter is Castello — the walled hilltop old town, where the Bastione di Saint Remy terrace looks out over the harbour and the cathedral and lanes sit inside medieval Pisan ramparts. Two things genuinely set it apart: Poetto, an eight-kilometre city beach you reach by local bus, and the Molentargius wetland right behind it, where pink flamingos nest at the edge of town. Eat fregola con arselle — toasted Sardinian semolina pearls with clams, nothing like mainland pasta. Come May–June or September–October: warm sea, thinner crowds, and fares that haven't hit summer peak. July–August is hot and packed; winter is mild but quiet, worth it mainly for the low prices.
