🌍 About Praia
Praia is Cape Verde's capital, on Santiago — the most African of the islands, not a beach-resort base like Sal or Boa Vista. The old town, Plateau, sits on a flat-topped bluff above the harbour; below it the Sucupira market is the real pulse of the city, selling everything from fish to phone cases. The thing actually worth the trip is Cidade Velha, 15km west: the first European colonial town in the tropics and a UNESCO site, with the original pillory still standing in the square. Eat cachupa, the slow-cooked corn-and-bean stew that's the national dish — best the next morning, fried with an egg. Come November to June for dry, warm days around 25–29°C; skip August to October, when it's hot, humid and the rains hit.
