Aegean Airlines does not fly to Zanzibar, but its Athens base makes it easy to reach any of these connecting hubs. • Avoid the peaks if you can: August and the Christmas/New Year period are the busiest and most expensive.

• Consider the long rains (March–May) for the cheapest fares — showers are usually short and the island is quiet, though some smaller hotels close.
• Compare all-in prices including bags: Gulf, Ethiopian and full-service carriers to Zanzibar generally include a checked bag, but the cheapest “light” fares may not.

Arriving in Zanzibar

All flights land at Abeid Amani Karume International (ZNZ), about 7 km south of Stone Town. There is no train or public rail, so the usual way in is a taxi from the airport rank — roughly €10–€15 to Stone Town, and more to the northern and eastern beach resorts (agree the fare before you set off). Most visitors need a visa on arrival (around US$50, payable in cash), and US dollars are widely accepted alongside the Tanzanian shilling. Many hotels arrange a transfer, which is often the easiest option after a long flight.
