Casablanca to Tangier is a short domestic hop up Morocco’s Atlantic coast — barely an hour in the air, but with a serious rival on the ground. Royal Air Maroc runs the only non-stop flights, while the Al Boraq high-speed train covers the same ground in about two hours for a fraction of the price. This guide covers who flies the route, a fair fare in dirhams, and when flying actually beats the train.
Route: Casablanca (CMN, Mohammed V) → Tangier (TNG, Ibn Battouta)
Distance: approximately 330 km (205 miles)
Non-stop flight time: about 1 hour (roughly 55 minutes to 1h 15m in the air)
Direct flights: Yes — Royal Air Maroc flies non-stop, several times a week. It is the only carrier we have seen operating this domestic pair non-stop; Air Arabia Maroc serves Tangier from other cities and abroad, but not directly from Casablanca.
Fares from Casablanca to Tangier (MAD)
This is a domestic route, so fares track Moroccan travel patterns rather than a foreign holiday season. The summer months — especially July and August, when Moroccans living abroad return home — are the busiest and priciest, along with the year-end holidays. Spring and autumn are the quietest. The figures below are indicative economy return fares in dirhams; one-way tickets are usually a little over half the return.
| Month | Demand |
|---|---|
| January | low-medium |
| February | low |
| March | medium |
| April | medium |
| May | medium |
| June | medium-high |
| July | very high |
| August | very high |
| September | medium |
| October | medium |
| November | low |
| December | high |
Indicative reference: a strong economy return on Royal Air Maroc sits around DH 850–DH 1,000, a typical fair price is roughly DH 1,200–DH 1,400, and anything under about DH 900 return is a good grab outside summer. Bear in mind the Al Boraq train covers the same journey from around DH 149 in second class — on price alone, the train usually wins.
Airlines on this route
Non-stop (about 1 hour):
- Royal Air Maroc — the national carrier and the only airline we have seen flying Casablanca → Tangier non-stop, several rotations a week from its Casablanca hub, typically on narrow-body and Embraer regional jets. Handy if you’re connecting from an international Royal Air Maroc flight into Casablanca.
The real alternative — the Al Boraq high-speed train:
- ONCF Al Boraq (TGV) — Africa’s first high-speed line links Casablanca and Tangier in about 2 hours 10 minutes, city centre to city centre, with departures roughly hourly through the day. Second class runs from around DH 149 and first class from around DH 129–292, well below the flight once you add airport transfers. For most travellers it’s faster door-to-door and far cheaper.
In short: fly if you’re connecting through Casablanca on a single Royal Air Maroc ticket or you specifically need the airport-to-airport speed. For a standalone city-to-city trip, the train is usually the smarter buy.
When to book & how to save
- Book 3–6 weeks ahead for the best flight fares; last-minute domestic seats on the single daily-ish rotation can climb quickly.
- Avoid July and August if you can — summer and the returning-diaspora peak push both flights and trains to their fullest and dearest.
- Price the train first. On a straight Casablanca–Tangier trip, Al Boraq is normally cheaper and comparable in total journey time; only book the flight when the numbers or a connection justify it.
- Use the connection. If you’re arriving into Casablanca on a long-haul Royal Air Maroc flight, adding the Tangier leg on the same ticket is often cheaper than buying it separately and saves a bag re-check.
- Travel light. On short domestic hops the lowest fares may include only cabin baggage — check the checked-bag allowance before comparing the all-in price.
Arriving in Tangier
Flights land at Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport (TNG), about 12–15 km southwest of the city centre. There’s no rail link from the airport, so the usual way in is a grand taxi from the rank — expect roughly DH 150–DH 200 to the medina or the seafront, a little more after dark; agree the fare before you set off. A ride into town takes about 20–30 minutes. If you take the Al Boraq train instead, you arrive at Tanger Ville station, already inside the city and walkable to many hotels.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the flight from Casablanca to Tangier?
The non-stop flight takes about one hour — roughly 55 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes in the air, depending on winds and routing. Add time for check-in and airport transfers at both ends: door to door it’s usually 3–4 hours, which is why the Al Boraq train (about 2h 10m city to city) is competitive.
Are there direct flights from Casablanca to Tangier?
Yes. Royal Air Maroc flies non-stop several times a week from Casablanca’s Mohammed V hub to Tangier. It’s the only airline we have seen operating this domestic pair non-stop — Air Arabia Maroc serves Tangier from other cities and internationally, but not directly from Casablanca.
How much does it cost to fly from Casablanca to Tangier?
A typical economy return runs about DH 850–DH 2,400 depending on the season, with the best fares around DH 850–DH 1,000 outside summer and the highest prices in July and August. For comparison, the Al Boraq train starts near DH 149 in second class.
What is the cheapest month to fly from Casablanca to Tangier?
February and November are usually the cheapest months to fly. The spring and autumn shoulders (March–May, September–October) are also good value. Avoid July, August and the year-end holidays, which are the busiest and most expensive.
Which airlines fly from Casablanca to Tangier?
Royal Air Maroc is the only carrier we have seen flying the route non-stop. There are no other direct domestic operators on this pair, so if you want to fly, Royal Air Maroc is the choice; otherwise the Al Boraq high-speed train is the popular alternative between the two cities.
Which airport do I fly into in Tangier?
You land at Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport (TNG), roughly 12–15 km southwest of the city. A grand taxi into the centre costs about DH 150–DH 200 and takes 20–30 minutes; there’s no airport train, so budget for the taxi.
How far in advance should I book Casablanca to Tangier flights?
Aim to book 3 to 6 weeks ahead. There are only a handful of weekly flights, so seats and the lowest fares go early, especially in the June–August peak. If your dates fall in summer or over the holidays, book as soon as you can.
Is it cheaper to fly on weekdays?
Often, yes. Midweek departures (Tuesday to Thursday) are usually a little cheaper and quieter than Friday–Sunday, when weekend and family travel pushes prices up. Being flexible by a day or two, or shifting to an off-peak departure, is one of the easiest ways to trim the fare.
