Cheap Flights Los Angeles to Tokyo 2026 — Fares, Airlines & Best Time to Book

Los Angeles to Tokyo is one of the most competitive trans-Pacific routes there is, with a full slate of US and Japanese carriers flying it non-stop in about 11 hours, plus a low-cost option that dominates the cheap end. It is also cheaper than most people assume: checking every fare on sale, ZIPAIR non-stops to Narita run $596 to about $1,010, with a median of $636 — and that includes August departures. This guide covers who flies the route, which Tokyo airport you actually land at, what a return really costs in US dollars, and when to book.

Route: Los Angeles (LAX) → Tokyo Haneda (HND) / Narita (NRT)

Distance: approximately 8,800 km (5,470 miles)

Non-stop flight time: about 11h 15m westbound — every non-stop we track runs 11h 00m to 11h 15m — and roughly 9h 50m eastbound on the return with the jet stream behind you

Direct flights: Yes — ANA, Japan Airlines, United, Delta and American fly non-stop to Haneda (HND), and budget carrier ZIPAIR flies non-stop to Narita (NRT). Check which airport your fare uses: every non-stop in our cheapest-fare data lands at Narita, ZIPAIR’s among them, so the cheap ticket and the convenient airport are usually not the same ticket.

Fares from Los Angeles to Tokyo (USD)

Tokyo is a year-round destination, and demand climbs around the late-March/early-April cherry-blossom season, the July–August summer holidays and the Christmas/New Year peak, with January–February the quietest stretch. We do not print a dollar figure against each month, because we can only price the dates actually on sale — and the low-cost non-stop proved remarkably season-proof, still starting at $596 for August departures in the middle of the summer peak. The table below tells you when Japan is busy; the live fares above tell you what the flight costs.

Month Demand What to expect
January low (post-holiday) the quietest window of the year
February low still calm before the spring rush
March high (blossom season) demand climbs sharply late in the month
April high (blossom season) the busiest weeks in Japan
May medium eases once Golden Week is over
June medium rainy season, thinner crowds
July high (summer) school holidays both sides of the Pacific
August high peak summer — yet the low-cost non-stop still priced from $596 when we checked
September low-medium a good-value shoulder month
October medium (autumn leaves) foliage season draws visitors
November medium quieter as the leaves finish
December very high (holidays) the year-end peak

Checked against every return fare on sale as we write: the cheapest is a ZIPAIR non-stop to Narita at $596, and ZIPAIR’s fares run $596 to about $1,010 with a median of $636 — that is the going rate on this route, not a sale. Full-service non-stops sit far above it: United about $1,045 and Japan Airlines $2,653 and up, with one-stop Qatar itineraries around $1,210–$1,386. So do not treat $900 as normal here. Anything near $600–$650 is simply the low-cost fare doing its job, under $600 is a genuine find, and everything above about $1,000 is what you pay for a full-service seat. Add bags to the ZIPAIR fare before comparing.

Airlines on this route

Non-stop to Narita — where the cheap fares are (about 11h 15m):

  • ZIPAIR — the low-cost long-haul arm of JAL, non-stop LAX–Narita on the 787, and the carrier behind more than four out of five of the cheapest fares we track, at $596–$1,010. Bags and meals are charged separately, so price it all-in.

Non-stop full-service (about 11h 15m):

  • ANA — Japan’s largest carrier, multiple daily non-stops on the 787 and 777, excellent economy service and central Haneda arrivals. It does not appear among the cheapest fares we track, so expect full-service pricing.
  • Japan Airlines (JAL) — non-stop on the 787, consistently well-rated, with strong onward connections across Japan and Asia. In our fare data its returns start around $2,653.
  • United, Delta and American — each flies non-stop to Haneda on the 787, handy for connecting across the wider US network. United appears in our data at about $1,045.

Because so many airlines fly this route non-stop there is little reason to take a connection, and the data agrees: the one-stop itineraries we found (Qatar via Doha, from about $1,210) cost roughly twice the cheapest non-stop. For rock-bottom prices, price up ZIPAIR to Narita with only the bags you need against a full-service fare to Haneda — and weigh the longer transfer from Narita into that comparison.

When to book & how to save

  • Book 2–4 months ahead for the best balance of price and choice; trans-Pacific fares to Tokyo climb quickly as the cherry-blossom and summer peaks approach.
  • Fly in the off-peak January–February or the September shoulder for uncrowded travel outside the blossom rush. On price, note that the low-cost non-stop barely moved in the dates we could check — it still started at $596 in peak August.
  • Avoid late March to early April (cherry-blossom season) and the July–August and Christmas peaks, which are the busiest and priciest.
  • Weigh Haneda vs Narita — and expect Narita if you are chasing the fare: Haneda is far closer to central Tokyo, but every non-stop in our cheapest-fare data arrives at Narita. A ZIPAIR fare into Narita still works out cheaper overall; just budget more time and money for the transfer.
  • Check bag rules on low-cost fares: ZIPAIR’s headline price excludes checked bags, so add them in before comparing against ANA, JAL, United, Delta or American.

Arriving in Tokyo

Which airport you land at depends on the fare. Haneda (HND), about 15 km south of central Tokyo, is served by the full-service non-stops; every non-stop among the cheapest fares we track arrives at Narita instead. From there the Tokyo Monorail or Keikyu Line reaches the city in 15–30 minutes for roughly $3–$5, and a taxi runs about $50–$70. If you fly ZIPAIR you arrive at Narita (NRT), about 60 km east; the Narita Express train takes around 60 minutes to central Tokyo for roughly $20, or the cheaper Keisei Access Express costs a few dollars less. Check which airport your ticket uses before booking onward transport — they are on opposite sides of the metropolis.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the flight from Los Angeles to Tokyo?

Non-stop flights take about 11 hours 15 minutes westbound (Los Angeles to Tokyo) — every non-stop we track runs between 11h00m and 11h15m. The return leg to LAX is quicker with the tailwinds, about 9 hours 50 minutes. It is one of the shorter trans-Pacific long-hauls from LAX, which is part of why it stays so competitively priced.

Are there direct flights from Los Angeles to Tokyo?

Yes — plenty. ANA, Japan Airlines, United, Delta and American all fly non-stop to Tokyo Haneda, and low-cost ZIPAIR flies non-stop to Tokyo Narita. With dozens of weekly departures, non-stop seats are easy to find year-round, so connections are rarely worthwhile on this route.

How much does it cost to fly from Los Angeles to Tokyo?

Less than the route’s reputation suggests. The cheapest fares are ZIPAIR non-stops to Narita at $596–$1,010, median $636, and that held even for August departures. Full-service non-stops are a different market: United about $1,045, Japan Airlines from $2,653. Bags are extra on the low-cost fare, so add them before comparing.

What is the cheapest month to fly from Los Angeles to Tokyo?

January and February are the quietest months once the holiday rush ends, with September another good-value shoulder. On this route, though, the month matters less than the airline: the low-cost non-stop started at $596 even for peak-August dates when we checked. Late March to early April (cherry blossom), July–August and the December holidays are still the busiest times to travel.

Which airlines fly from Los Angeles to Tokyo?

Non-stop to Haneda: ANA, Japan Airlines, United, Delta and American. Non-stop to Narita: low-cost ZIPAIR, which supplies the great majority of the cheapest fares we track at $596–$1,010. For the lowest base fare, compare ZIPAIR with bags added against the full-service airlines — in our data United runs about $1,045 and JAL from $2,653.

Which airport do I fly into in Tokyo?

Both are in use and it depends on the fare, so confirm your ticket. Haneda (HND) is the closer and more convenient airport, about 15 km from the centre, and the full-service non-stops serve it. Narita (NRT) is roughly 60 km east — and every non-stop among the cheapest fares we track arrives there, ZIPAIR’s included. They are on opposite sides of Tokyo, so arrange transfers accordingly.

How far in advance should I book Los Angeles to Tokyo flights?

Aim to book 2 to 4 months ahead. Fares rise as the cherry-blossom (late March–April), summer and Christmas peaks approach, so early booking usually wins. The quiet January–February window is the main exception where later booking can still find a good price.

Is it cheaper to fly on weekdays?

Often, yes — midweek departures (Tuesday to Thursday) usually price a little lower than weekend travel, and being flexible by a day or two can save $50–$150 on a return. With so many daily flights on this route, shifting your dates slightly is one of the easiest ways to cut the fare.
