🌍 About Entebbe
Most travellers only meet Entebbe as the airport — the gateway for gorilla and safari trips inland — but it's a calm town right on Lake Victoria, worth a day before or after the bush. The real reason to linger is Mabamba Swamp, a papyrus wetland about 40 minutes away and one of the easiest places on earth to see a shoebill: a metre-tall, prehistoric-looking stork you track from a wooden dugout canoe. Back in town, eat a Rolex — a chapati rolled around a fried egg-and-vegetable omelette, Uganda's signature street snack — and tilapia pulled straight from the lake. Come in the dry seasons, June to August or December to February, when birding and boat trips actually happen; the long rains of March to May turn the swamp tracks to mud.
