🌍 About Saint Martin
This is the Dutch half of an island shared with France — Sint Maarten, capital Philipsburg, since the Netherlands Antilles was dissolved in 2010. Everyone comes for Maho Beach, which sits right at the end of Princess Juliana airport's runway: arriving jets pass a few metres over the sand on final approach, low enough to feel the engine wash. For food, skip the cruise-port spots in Philipsburg and head to Grand Case on the French side, where lolos — open-air grills — do ribs, grilled lobster and conch cheap. Drink guavaberry, the island's spiced-rum liqueur made from a wild local berry, not guava. Come December–April for dry, dependable weather; avoid August–October, the worst of hurricane season — Irma flattened the island in September 2017.
