Book the cheapest Air India Express fare — Xpress Lite — and on a domestic Indian route you get exactly nothing in the hold: zero free checked baggage, just 7 kg of cabin allowance plus a personal item. That’s the catch buried in the headline price. But the cheapest-fare rule is not the same on every route. On Gulf and other international sectors the lowest published fare almost always bundles checked baggage in — typically 30 kg to the Gulf, and 15–25 kg on other international routes — because Air India Express sells those as a checked-bag-inclusive product, not a strip-it-bare LCC fare.
So the honest one-liner is: domestic = bag-stripped, Gulf/international = bag usually included. Above Lite, the ladder is Value (15 kg domestic / 30 kg Gulf), Flex (same weights plus free changes) and Biz (25 kg domestic / 40 kg Gulf plus a meal and seat). Cabin allowance — 7 kg, 55 x 35 x 25 cm, plus a small personal item — is identical across all four. Know which side of the domestic/international line your deal sits on before you assume the bag is free.

What you actually get on a cheap fare
On a cheap domestic Air India Express deal fare you get a seat and 7 kg of cabin — and that’s it. The Xpress Lite price you saw has no hold bag. Budget to add one before you fly: prepaid online it’s cheapest (around ₹500 for 5 kg, ₹900 for 10 kg), but rock up at the counter and you’re paying roughly ₹600 per kg domestically. A 15 kg bag bought at the airport can cost more than the ticket. Always add the bag at booking or in Manage Booking, never at the gate.
On a Gulf or international deal fare the maths flips. The cheapest fare to Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Doha and the like usually already includes a checked bag (often 30 kg), so the strip-the-bag warning doesn’t apply — confirm the allowance on your itinerary rather than assuming. If it shows zero, prepaid excess to the Gulf is still far cheaper than the brutal ~₹3,000–7,000 per kg airport rate. The single most expensive mistake on this airline is buying weight at check-in.
Oversize, sports & special items
Sports equipment, musical instruments and other oversized items aren’t part of the standard allowance — they ride as excess/special baggage and should be prepaid; a bulky instrument can be carried in the cabin only if you buy an extra seat for it. Mobility aids (wheelchairs, walking sticks, crutches) fly free and don’t count against your allowance. Lithium-ion power banks must travel in the cabin only, never in the hold: up to 100 Wh is fine, 100–160 Wh needs airline approval, and anything over 160 Wh is banned.
2025/2026 changes: Gulf international checked allowance rose from 20 kg to 30 kg in January 2025. The four-tier Xpress Lite / Value / Flex / Biz fare structure is now standard following the merger of AirAsia India into Air India Express. From January 2026 the airline aligned its pet policy with parent Air India, accepting small pets (under ~5 kg with carrier) in the cabin and in the hold on select routes.
Baggage by region & route
Air India Express is a low-cost carrier. The cheapest Xpress Lite fare has NO free checked bag; most fares include 15 kg, raised to 30 kg on Gulf and SE-Asia Value/Flex fares (Jan 2025).
| Region / route | Cheapest economy checked allowance | System |
|---|---|---|
| Xpress Lite (cheapest) | No free checked bag — buy ahead | — |

✈️ Air India Express is a low-cost carrier, not in an alliance — no cross-carrier elite baggage benefit.
Pre-purchase any checked bag online — it is far cheaper than at the airport. Allowances are for the cheapest bookable economy fare, web-verified June 2026; always confirm on your e-ticket as fares and routes change.
Frequently asked questions
Does the cheapest Air India Express fare include a checked bag?
Not on domestic routes. Xpress Lite, the lowest domestic fare, includes only 7 kg cabin plus a personal item and no free hold bag. On Gulf and most international routes the cheapest fare typically does include a checked bag (often 30 kg) — check your itinerary to be sure.
How much cabin baggage can I bring?
7 kg with maximum dimensions of 55 x 35 x 25 cm, on every fare including Xpress Lite, plus one small personal item under the seat. Bags over 12 kg won’t be accepted as hand baggage and must be checked in.
What's the checked allowance on Value and Flex fares?
15 kg on domestic flights and 30 kg on Gulf routes. Flex adds free date changes on top of the same weight. Biz raises it to 25 kg domestic / 40 kg Gulf with a meal and seat selection.
How much does it cost to add a checked bag domestically?
Prepaid online it’s roughly ₹500 for 5 kg and ₹900 for 10 kg if bought up to a few hours before departure. At the airport you pay around ₹600 per kg over your allowance, which is far more expensive.
Why is the Gulf airport excess so high?
Airport excess on Gulf/international routes runs roughly ₹3,000–7,000 per kg — much steeper than prepaid online rates. Always pre-purchase any extra weight when booking or in Manage Booking rather than at check-in.
Did Gulf baggage allowance change recently?
Yes. In January 2025 the Gulf international checked allowance increased from 20 kg to 30 kg on Value, Flex and equivalent fares, making bag-inclusive Gulf fares notably more generous.
Can I carry a power bank on Air India Express?
Only in your cabin baggage, never checked. Power banks up to 100 Wh need no approval; 100–160 Wh require airline approval; anything above 160 Wh is prohibited.
Are sports gear and instruments included in my allowance?
No. They travel as excess or special baggage and should be prepaid. Large instruments can only go in the cabin if you book an extra seat for them. Wheelchairs and mobility aids are carried free and don’t count against your allowance.
