Curaçao sits outside the hurricane belt off Venezuela, so it's arid — cactus, divi-divi trees bent by the trade winds — and genuinely sunny year-round, which is rare for the Caribbean. Willemstad's Handelskade is the real sight: a row of Dutch colonial merchant houses painted ochre, mint and pink right at the harbour's edge, fronted by the Queen Emma Bridge, a pontoon walkway that swings aside on its own engine to let ships pass. Order keshi yena — a hollowed wheel of Gouda or Edam stuffed with spiced, raisin-flecked meat, a thrifty colonial dish that became the national one. The island speaks Papiamentu, its own creole. It's a year-round destination; rain peaks mildly October–December but rarely ruins a day. Those wetter months are also the cheapest fares, so a deal here is low-risk.
