Perth is the most isolated major city on Earth — the nearest city of any size, Adelaide, is a two-day drive across the Nullarbor. That remoteness is the point: its beaches and bushland feel emptier than anywhere comparable. Skip the CBD and base yourself in Fremantle, the old port town with a working harbour, convict-era limestone buildings, and the best fish and chips in WA eaten on the wharf. From there a short ferry reaches Rottnest Island, car-free and home to the quokka — the small marsupial whose grin made the "quokka selfie" a thing. In summer the afternoon sea breeze, the "Fremantle Doctor," reliably kills the heat around 3pm. Come September–November: warm, dry, wildflowers out, and not yet baking.
