🌍 About Azores

The Azores are nine volcanic islands in the mid-Atlantic, a four-hour hop from Lisbon and closer to Portugal's deal fares than you'd think. On São Miguel, the main island, eat cozido das Furnas — a meat-and-vegetable stew buried in the ground at Furnas and slow-cooked for hours by volcanic steam, dug up at lunchtime. The other unmissable sight is Sete Cidades, twin crater lakes (one blue, one green) sitting in a single caldera. São Miguel also grows Europe's only tea; Gorreana has been running since the 1880s and lets you walk the rows for free. Come June to September for the warmest, driest weather and the calmest seas for whale watching; blue whales pass through on their spring migration. Winter is mild but wet and windy — cheaper, but you'll dodge a lot of rain.
